I got up yesterday morning and had a ton of things to do. I go out and put the key in turn it and i get an extremely sluggish crank, i thought it was the battery cable issue i THOUGHT i had been having i get out and make sure all connections are clean and tight. Get back in and turn the key all i get is a click.
Tried it one more time, thought well for some reason my 4 month old 2) 1000 CCA batteries are dead. Got out of the truck and it dawned on me if the batteries were dead i would be hearing that oh so pleasant clicking sound from under the dash. Then it all STARTs to make a lil more sense to me, Most of you have heard me mention for a couple months about needing to replace my battery cables because of sluggish cranks. I WAS WRONG. The starter has apparently been on its last leg for about 4 months now and yesterday was the day it decided to die. I unhooked both terminals crawled underneath took the 3 bolts out removed the cable and the small other wire. Took it to the 'Zone and he tested and said it was toasted. So i go home with a new starter and a MUCH lighter wallet. I call Ziggy.(aka Chuck Norris w/ a wrench) and he proceeds to tell me if I would have called him he would have brought me one of his he has laying around!!I go home and put the new one in turn the key an Wa La starts like a brand new truck. My wife comes out and says WOW your truck has never sounded like that when it started!!!!!
Sorry for the long post
For future reference, I got a GREAT deal from Nations Starter & Alternator (WEBSITE) in Missouri for a 100% new Mitsubishi (OEM) starter. Yes, it took a few days to get to me, but I didn't have to be driving the truck during that time, so no biggie for me.
Hey Ray, just out of curiosity, how much did it set you back, I have one sitting in my car that I still need to put in my SD, cost me 199.99 plus $40 core that I still need to get back. Was that 3rd upper bolt a bear to get out? I am not looking forward to it.
It was $173.99 tax and all came to $190.52. Heres the real kicker The core charge was $195, they must want those back BAD!!!!!
Yes that bolt was a pain in the butt! I have a pivoting head ratchet with a crooked handle that made it easier. The bolt heads are 17mm and the small nut on the side is a 5/16" and the nut that holds the cable on is also 17mm iirc.
I used a 3/8" drive ratchet wrench with a 6" extension bar, & deep socket. Not the easiest, but if you start with that one, you can sometimes take the ratchet off & just turn the extension bar with your fingers.
I have been reluctant to replace my starter, I have owned truck a month and every 5th start you'd here that horrible noise of it getting stuck or stripping the teeth, I noticed a bad battery, and a low CCA one, I replaced it and it's only done it once since, I don't know if starter should still be replaced or not.

Hmmm... well, sounds like having good batteries "fixed" your issue. Question: Did you replace both? You may not know this, but you should always replace batteries in a diesel as a set.
How many times have you started it since "fixing" the battery issue? 5? 50? Once in 50, I'd just roll with it. Once in five? Hmmm.... keep a VERY close eye on it. A new starter is much cheaper & easier to swap than your flexplate....
Well I did hear that, the left was 1 year old, 1000 cca, right was 720 cca, I did at least replace it with the exact brand and model. I have started it maybe 20 times, only the one quick turn and it did it, usually or before it would do it, and I'd have to turn the key 5-10 times for it to kick in.
Just a thought, you may want to give this a try. I have never personally used these but i have heard alot of good things about them. If i had time to wait i would have given them a try and saved myself $50 http://www.db-starter-alternator.com...ND0355%2017802
I hope i dont get my hand smacked for throwing that link out there Jim!!!
