How much can I really Tow??

Living in colorado, with the many, many hills, I'm hesitant to purchase a travel trailer that weights more than 5000 pounds.

I've got a 1999 F250 with the V10 and a 3.73 gear ratio. We usually camp on the flat lands, but If I purchase a travel trailer, I don't want to be limited to the flat lands.

So basically, I'm looking for any first hand experience towing up long hills, at high altitude with that engine/tranny combo.

Thanks,
Chris.

It would do a lot better if you swapped to 4.30 gears.

I second that. The 3.73s are nice on the highway and great for mileage, but hit a hill and you'll feel it. I've got 3.73's with my PSD and it hates hills somedays.

Understand that gearing helps, but I'm looking for real world experience with the V10, 3.73s, high altitude towing, and what works and what doesn't in regards to trailer weight.

thanks,
Chris.

thinking that maximum weight would be around 6k unloaded. We've got a popup that weighed about 3200, and while the truck towed it fine, on steep grades it would struggle to keep it at 55.

On those grades, just don't be afraid to rev it up. The modular engines can hold 4500 rpm all day long.

I agree with Cartmania.
6K plus 2K for people & stuff only puts you at 8K, Your truck should be able to handle that.

I think you would like a custom tune from Mike @ 5 StarTuning, he has a V-10 like yours and has perfected tunes for the V-10s. I could not be happier with the tunes he gave me.

Talking V10 ability

I am on my second S.D., use the information below.

I second that about Mike @ 5 Star Tuning.
He know his stuff........tell him that Jon Langer in TX sent you.
Call him @843-667-3595 during business hours.
Also ask him about what other tricks and parts that you can
do with that truck.

You have a great ratio......do not let anyone talk you into
changing gears in the rear end.
You will regret losing overall MPG permanently, instead of
only when you are towing.
Instead try these:
1) K&N complete air intake sysem.
Performance air flow in.
2) Flowmaster cat back 3" single exhaust with FM70 muffler.
Performance with quiet.
3) Long tube coated headers.
Performance air flow out.
4) SCT X3 livewire system with 3 custom tunes.
All new software tuning.
5) RV cams instead of stock.
Cheap performance power.

All above will jump you 50 more rear wheel HP&TQ over stock.
Unless you want to go to some kind of added boost system.
That will cost about $6,000 and jump you up 100 HP more.
Hope this helps give you something to think about.

I haven't heard much about changing cams on the V10, interesting you bring that up.

what kind of a race are you trying to win?

just because you're not cruising at the maximum speed limit doesn't mean you're unsafe...as long as you can keep the minimum speed limit.

I tow a 5k # travel trailer with my 2v 5.4 at 5k+ ft elev. It tows just fine - I don't think you will have a problem with a v10.

The E350 RVs got different cams than the other 99 V10s?

BS.
Have you ever towed a 10K trailer in hills with 3.73s?

I've been towing 6000 lb trailer over 10,000 ' elevations in Utah with 6-cylinder SUV just fine.
Would I drive V10 I would take the question as an insult
