I am seeking some advise and information on a leak I noticed on my 79 ford f150 351M. I recently changed out the valve cover gaskets because there was oil buildup on both sides of the motor and the gaskets were dried up and leaking. After replacing the two gaskets I notice oil atound the tranny bellhousing and the inspection port between tranny and motor. I wiped it off and thought that maybe the oil residue was there due to the valve cover gaskets leaking. Next day. signs of oil again around the inspection port. Originally I was hoping that it could possibly be the oil pan because the gasket seems dried up as well. Now I am worried it could be the rear main seal. Is this seal difficult to replace? Does the motor have to come out to do this job? Could it possibly be something else? Thanks
Many times, the oil pressure sending unit leaks, and the oil drips down the back of the block onto the bellhousing and down to the inspection plate, making it look like a rear main seal leak. The sending unit is directly behind the intake on the top of the block. Check that out first.
Ok, so I think the oil leak is not coming from the rear main seal. The reason I say this is because I placed a shop rag snug tight in between the oil pan and tranny and so far no oil in the inspection port or plate. I imagine if the rear main seal was leaking oil will be coming out through the inspection port correct? I also checked behind the intake for the oil sending unit and could not see any signs of fresh oil. Im not sure what the oil sending unit looks like but I checked the entire area behind the carburator. The question now is, could it be coming out of my oil pan gasket? I have not ran the truck in 3 weeks but normally oil would sip out through the inspection plate even after I wiped off and inspected the next day. Any advise is greatly appreciated!
I replaced the valve cover, oil pan, and rear main on my 400. Did the rear main with the motor in, just had to take the motor mounts off and jack it up with a bottle jack a little bit to get the pan off, the seal was easy, getting the pan off was harder. 4x4, dana 60 front end.
The oil sending unit isn't right behind the carburetor, it's behind the intake on the very back of the top of the block. There will be a single wire running to it.
