But now I have a ton of new questions.

1. As you can hear it's very loud. I had to take one of the headers off to replace the starter, and I didn't have a new gasket. Does the gasket really make that much difference as far as loudness?

2. I replaced the starter because I had the "one click" deal happening. Didn't fix the problem. So I cleaned all the contacts on the solenoid, and now it starts sometime, but sometimes just gives the "one click". Would a bad solenoid cause this?

3. It won't stay running when I take my foot off the gas. Is this a simple carb adjustment?

4. The cable from the solenoid to the starter has to run through the headers. How can I protect that cable? Is there some kind of heat wrap I can put on it?

5. Once I got it running the oil pressure and volt meters came on and gave me good readings. The engine temp also started going up, but I only let it run for a few minutes. How can I verify that my water pump is circulating coolant before I let the engine get to running temperature?

to answer a few of your question

1. yes the header gasket is important but i have seen trucks run for ever with one leaking.
2.very possible that the silenoid could be going bad or it could be a bad connection, silenoids are only 10 or 15 bucks so its not like your out an arm and a leg trying it
3. do you contiually have to pump the throttle or can you keep it at one spot and its fine if you have to pump it its your accelarator pump if not them it could be as simple as turning the idle screw inward.
4.i would try and get a longer cable and run it away from it if possibly
5. pop the cap and see if its got pressure or squeeze the top radiator hose and see if it has pressure after letting it warm up for a few, just watch your gauge and make sure that it dont go to far over

Didnt sound to bad. Idle may just be set to low. When you change out that header gasket and stop the leak your gonna be amazed at how much better it sounds.

I had the problem of having to keep my foot on the pedal to keep it running in my '81 and after trying to adjust the carb, new plug wires, distributor cap, rotor button and alot of frustration I found out that the coil was bad. Trying pulling the coil wire off the distibutor and check for good spark. Don't know why I even replaced half of that stuff lol but it needed it anyway.

Ok, more questions.

The truck has factory air. Needless to say it's a huge pain in the *** to work around. What would be the effect of removing the compressor and air box?
