Ok, I have been trying to find where my leak is coming from on my 85 f-150 351 W 4V H.O. The oil ends up dripping off of the area on the inspection cover on the bellhousing. When I first took off the inspection cover, there was no puddle of oil in there. Now that I have taken it off there is oil in there, so I am pretty sure that the oil is just blowing up in there from when I drive. I noticed that oil was coming from the intake manifold gasket, so I just replaced that gasket, and that doesn't leak anymore. I have replaced the oil sending unit, and the valve cover gaskets, and they don't leak anymore. I washed off the engine, and the oil pan gasket doesn't appear to be leaking. There is a small amount of oil on the starter. Does anybody have any more ideas of where this could be coming from???
I took a couple of pics, the first one just shows where the oil drips off the bellhousing. The other is of the starter, and the oil that is on it.
Would there be oil behind the inspection plate if it was the rear main? or is that seperated by the rest of the plate so that it would run down the front of it.
the rear main should show up from the inside of the plate, the inside of the converter area should be getting covered, and it would drip ou of the inspection area if it isn't plugged up with crud. I had a Mustang that had the crud blocking it enough it turned the clutch into an oil bath...I had wondered why it no longer was losing any oil until the clutch started slipping, and drained about a quart out of the bell housing....
Well, I just took out the transmission and took out the rear main seal. It turns out that there was about 1/4 of the inside part missing, and the outside was very loose as well, it took very little to pull it out. So now I put some gasket stuff around the outside of the seal, incase of any scratches( although I didn't have to use a screwdriver or anything to get it out) ( and it was an original Ford seal). Now I will start putting everything back together. We'lll see if my oil leak stops.. hopefully
This may sound odd but are there any leaks on the timing chain cover? It can leak on the front seals of crank or cam the when it comes out the timing chain cover it gets blown to back by the fan. Obvious things are valve covers, intake gaskets, head gaskets, rear main seal, front seal on tranny, pvc valve, dristributor gasket, tranny or oil cooler if equipt with, tranny cooler lines, oil dip stick fill tube. Good luck
The leak is gone... It was the rear main, along with the oil sending unit, the valve cover gaskets, the intake manifold gaskets the pcv valve, the distributer gasket,.. I still have alittle oil that runs down the oil dipstick tube, and after driving for a few miles, the dipstick starts popping out, anybody know why it does that?
