block id question

I've been searching around on here looking for id # and not finding what I'm looking for. I'm nearly computer illiterate so this does'nt surprise me. The number on my 240 block is O6AE-6015-D as far as I can tell they're rather worn, my question is,is this a 240 or 300 or can I tell by the numbers? If some one could direct me to a site about this info I would appreciate it! Thanks!

Measure the stroke.

240 is 4.00 x 3.28
300 is 4.00 x 3.98

you can do this with a women dowel or white solid copper wire.

Remove the number one spark plug, disconnect the coil. put the rod in the hole and use a socket to spin the engine do one complete revolution marking the bottom of travel and top of travel. this will give you the stroke of the engine.

240s and 300 are identical on the outside.

pretty much the only way to tell for sure is to take off the head and measure the stroke, 240 is just over 3 inches, 300 is just under 4.

a little think I learned though, look at your oil pan, where is the drain plug?

300 will have it in the center, 240 on the driver's side. not necessarily a for sure way to tell, but you can be fairly certain. also, since the 240 and 300 are pretty much the same engine, almost all gaskets and parts are the same, a few that are not... dipstick, I believe the timing cover has different timing marks... and that's about it haha.

1965 F100/350 240 I-6 specs: B&S: 4.00" x 3.18" / 150 Gross HP @ 4,000 RPM / Torque: 234 ft. lbs. @ 2200 RPM.

1965 F100/350 300 I-6 specs: B&S: 4.00" x 3.98" / 170 Gross HP @ 4,000 RPM / Torque: 283 ft. lbs. @ 1400-2400 RPM.

above is straight from a ND post, easy way is to pull a plug and measure the stroke
3.18" = 240
3.98" = 300

Garbz, only way I knew about the oil pan is from Bill's 65 240 he gave me that I can compare with my 300, built 8 days apart!

(Cool thing, mine and his 65's were built in the same plant at the same time!)

There's no such casting number prefix as O6AE, it's C6AE

All 1965/74 240/300 engine blocks were cast as 240's, measuring the stroke is the only way to know which one it is.

240's were used in 1965/74 F Series Trucks & Econolines / 1965/72 Galaxie/LTD's.

My guess is...with this C6AE casting number prefix, this is a 240 I-6 originally installed in a 1966/67 Galaxie/LTD.

(sigh) It is not necessary to remove the cylinder head to measure the stroke.

Well, I just measured the stroke and it is a 240, and the oil drain plug is on the drivers side. So at least now I know what I'm working with. Once again thanks for the info!
