Just thought I would post whats going on with my 08 F350 6.4. It had been driving fine all week. I parked yesterday at a job. About 1hr later I tried to leave, no dice. It started but would barely run. Real rough idle around 400-600RPM. I tried it a few times, then the check engine light came on. It wouldn't move if you put in gear, RPM's wouldn't get above 600, hitting the gas didn't do anything. So I had to have it towed to the dealer (which by the way is 45 minutes away). 25K on the truck, no mods. After reading some of the stories on here I'm getting nervous. Not to mention it's a plow truck and it's going to snow tomorrow. We'll see what the dealer has to say on Monday.
im going to guess that it has the old style EGR valve and has been stuck open for some time now and coked up the intake causing it to sufficate...
same exact word for word what happened to mine when this happened
I guess that wouldn't be the worst thing. How long did it take to fix and what all did they replace? I have notieced my mileage has decreased by about 2mpg over the last few thousand miles. But I didn't pay much attention to it because I haven't officially checked it. But it makes sense I suppose.
easy fix, but getting the part my take a day or two. Alot of times they break the housing getting the old one out.
How do you normally drive the truck? Alot of city or hwy driving? I would think that if you are driving on hwy a considerable amount of time then you wouldn't have EGR issues.
80% city 10% hwy and 10% snow plowing (during the winter). Summer is 90% city 10% hwy. I know the plowing is brutal on the wonderful DPF system. I was out plowing for 10hrs Sunday night. The "cleaning exhaust filter" is on most of the time. During a storm it will regen about every 25 miles.
I doubt this has anything to do with it but I had the same issue once, the connector to the fuel injector came loose on cylinder #4 and my engine ran like a cold lawnmower engine with the choke on.
I think the use of in the city driving as much is probably contributing to a plugged EGR. I would also be worried about excessive fuel in the oil. In order for this cleaning of the exhaust to get completed it needs to go on the open road to get it done. Prolonging the event is not good.
That is exactly what happened to me,exhaust smells real bad to?. You will need a new EGR valve. There is a newer revised valve out there, be sure to request it, as they replaced mine with an old one. I am not sure about the idling as I run my truck hard, typically 95% down the highway crusing at 120km/hr=72m/hr, towing assorted trailers 3500lbs-12000lbs., and mine still crapped out. Buy the way I always add fords fuel additives to a tank(cetane/lubricants),and my regenes are typically on the highway at crusing speed. After they replaced mine it works just fine for now. Just waiting for the next 50.000m. to replace again. Not to impressed with this emissions s*#t.
Nice work guys. EGR stuck open. He said they are coming in so fast with this issue that the new EGR is backordered until March 27th! But it sounds like I have a great service manager (I kind of already knew that, that's why I take it 45 minutes away). He found one at a dealer here in CO. He's not really sure how they had it but they did and I'm getting it. It is the new valve to not the old one. So I phsyced that it's going to be done this evening or early tomorrow. But I feel bad for all those who have to wait until the end of March. Thats insane. Especially since, like you guys said, they can't clean the old one because they ruin it pulling it out. Feels good to have a little luck on my side finally.
Glad to here that is all it is boulderbronco. Simple fix,so the mechanic told me. As far as the exhaust smell mine only smelled bad when the EGR valve was stuck open, but went away after a half tank of fuel. Makes one a look more towards a complete dpf-cat delete.
I never asked them about the exhaust smell. I don't think it's anything out of the ordinary. I've been thinking about the Spartan for a while. But I need to talk to my dealer a bit more about it. The service manager said he would honor the warranty but he wasn't sure what would happen if it was bad and Ford corporate/engineers got involved. We'll see. Just glad to have my truck back.
