I have 2 12 gage 500's one shoots 2 3/4" & 3". The other says only 2 3/4". Without taking them apart, I don't see any difference in the actions, receivers. The 2 3/4"- 3" barrel will go on the gun with the 2 3/4" barrel but with resistance, just doesn't feel right going in and is hard to get out. Can I put a barrel that shoots 3" shells on the one that says only 2 3/4" shells ?
You probably 'could' put the 3" chambered barrel on the receiver marked 2-3/4", but, WHY would you??
The ejector is probably more 'forward' on the 2-3/4" chambered receiver than the 3" receiver. (Remington 870s are this way!)
I don't think the receivers are 'that' different. Just the ejector location.
The locating 'tab' on the barrel MAY be longer.
I'm not really a Mossberg fan. The above is just opinion.
I know what your saying, I already have one that will shoot the 3" so why bother ? The 2 3/4" is a older one thats well used & I need just a little more reach for bird hunts + it's camoed out except for the barrel & I wanted to just buy a new camo barrel. I'll check that ejector deal out. Thanks.
I wouldn't try to change the 2&3/4 gun. You may buy the barrel & it jamb because the stroke of the ejector is too short. I have a Camo 835 turkey special. Its one of my favorite guns for hunting in bad or wet weather. I've gotten so much mud in it it wouldn't pump. I washed it out in the lake & shot ducks all day after I got the mud out. I ran a willow limb down the barrel to clear it. I dropped in in waist deep mud.My Browning Gold would have been finished if I'd done it like that. It gets dirty if you shoot it a bunch & sometimes jambs. The 835 never fails to fire. It sure kicks more than the Gold though.
If twer me I would pistol grip the one not used for hunting and bob the barrel till the loa was a tad over 27 inches ... Barrel should be around 19 inches (so long as it is over 18) ... Nice thing about long recievers, easy to stay within limits ...
I would not try to interchange the barrels with the recievers tho ... The models might be the same but with the age differences there is bound to be a bit of diff in the manufacturing tolerences and extractor/ejector placements ...
