63 f100 stuck in reverse?????

Hey Guys,

Im new to the forum and had quick question. I looked through the forum but did not see anybody ask this same exact question so here it goes. My aunt has this 63 f100 who im trying to help fix. The straight six has low miles and runs perfect. The truck drove my aunt everyday to work until one day it decided not to shift out of reverse. You can pull on the column shifter all day long and it will not budge. I dont want to spend a fortune trouble shooting. Any ideas on the best places to start? Thank you.

Don't force it, under the hood you will see the two shift arms on the column bump the one back to center.

The OP didn't say if this is a M/T or A/T.

If an A/T, the problem could be caused by the one selector lever on the column, or with the manual control lever on the trans.

There's a bushing in each one of these levers. When it age cracks, and/or falls out, the shift lever hangs up.

1963's came with FX C-O-M's, so the problem could also be caused by the reverse servo or reverse band.

Upps sorry, it is 3 on the tree (manual). Additionally I was looking at it last night and noticed that the drivers body mount is completely rusted free from the cab. I saw someone saying on here that the cab and frame may cause some kinks? is this true in my case? could I simply jack the body up slightly from that drivers side to see if it frees up the column? or will that damage something? thanks in advance

Yep! cab sag is a problem with the shifter not working correctly, lift it enough to make it level and shim with a block of wood or something. that will work for a short time untill you can fix it the right way.

And Welcome to FTE.

Well I lifted the cab and it did not work so I crawled under the truck and disconnected the arm that links the tranny to the column. I then tried to pull the little shift arm that comes of the tranny with my hand while the clutch was pushed in to see if i could get it to go into a different gear. It wouldent.

Then I tried starting the truck with the clutch pushed to the floor while it was still stuck in reverse. The truck tried to roll backwards. It seems as though the clutch is not doing its job...? Do I need to replace the whole clutch? or maybe just certain parts of it? or not at all? any ideas? Thanks

Could the clutch possibly be adjusted?
