Front Cover

I am attempting to install my injector pump on my new motor I bought the housing is off and still attached with the IP. What is the process for removing the front cover to be able to get the two lines aligned on the gears? Also I have the water pump off do I need to remove the damper to? Also do I have to put it at TDC before ?I put the IP on?

Yes you will have to have it at tdc with all the lines lined up. Some guys have used something like a thin mirror or a butter knife to see the marks. I think PLC7.3 walked rick through this. Maybe one of them will chime in.

I did this job with small round mirror on a telescopic handle. there is just enough room to get it in there. I also used a led light to light things up. When you get the mark up where you can see it use a paint maker to mark the spot on the tooth area then mark that same area on your ip gear and set them together it took me about a half hour to get mine lined up using a breaker bar on the crank pulley moving it a little at a time.

All the link does is take me to the homepage. How can it be done by taking the front cover off? Id rather do it that way, since I already have it most of the way apart.

With the cover off you can clearly see the timing marks on the gears. you just turn the engine till they all line up top to bottom. It is like setting the chain drive gears on a gasser.

I got the front cover off now, so I am going to want to get it at TDC on the compression stroke then the timing gears will be in the right spot, and I will want to line that mark up with the one on the injector pump, and im all set?

Will I be using the Y or the 0 on the gear to align to the IP?

From memory you have an o on the cam gear and the crank gear that should be together.
At the same time the y on the cam gear and the y on the IP gear go together.

And from top to bottom, all of the marks should be in a straight line.

That sounds right to me as well. You would think I could remember as it has only been just over a year lol.

The only part I was not sure about, but think I am good on is, was the y on the IP drive gear or the crank.

I think IP drive gear is where the y is and the o is on the crank.

The Timing Image

Here's the image that Ziggz uses in his tutorial.

I know, I know, shameless theft of other peoples work. But hey, a guy should do what he's good at, Right?

I have to point out, there are no timing marks on the oil pump gear and the bottom of the crank gear as shown in the picture.
