Ideas?

So I have this loud clunk under my feet when I come to a stop faster than at a slow crawl. It also does it again when I take off from said stop. It also does it when I'm turning on sharply changing elevation, like into a steep parking lot entrance. I can physically feel the clunk under my feet and my wife feels nothing under her's from the passenger side. The sound also seems to come from my side. I've already inspected for cracks and loose components but everything appears to be in good shape. Does this sound like worn out spring bushings on that side? Ball joints and front u-joints are brand new and this popping was occuring before replacing them but has recently got much worse. It is a 95 F250, 4x4, 460, e4od.

If it was an f150, I'd say it was your radius arm bushings, but since you have a 250, I'm going to vote for the transmission cross member. There is a very good writeup here somewhere about the crossmember binding and releasing causing a noise like what you describe. Best of all it can be fixed by yourself and the cost is free.

Thanks, I'll take a look for that when I get a chance. Any other ideas are welcome also.

I think it sounds like radius arm bushings, but it could be several things.

Also look at the shocks and see if the bolts are loose.

If it is not any of these, I would start checking bolts to see if anthing is loose.

It's too dark to go play with it now, but I'll check all this first thing in the morning. I'm putting in new spark plugs and wires in at the same time. Hopefully it's a broke transmission mount. I have another question though, if that is the case, why does it make the noise and the thump on the driver's side?

I found a tech article one time and I think it was called something like "Snap, Crackle, Pop". Anyway it was about all the noise form our trucks. I think it is centered around the trans cross member and how it was installed at the factory. I printed the article and never got around to doing it on my truck. Anyway, I am away on vacation and will be home tomorrow. When I get home I will dig it out and find the link. If I can't find the link I will scan it and send it to you by email.

Maybe this will ring a bell with someone and they may have the link available.

I'll let you know tomorrow some time.

Thank you very much sir. I would love to see that and see if I can't perform a little preventative maintenance while I'm down there.

I swapped out the spark plugs today along with plug wires. Why did they decide to make the spark plug on the driver's side closest to the firewall such a major pain to remove and reinstall? Jeebus. Anywho, I tried moving the tailshaft around but it didn't budge. I did peek at the transmission mount though and there is no more rubber in it so I'm assuming that's the source of my noise. I still want to see this crossmember issue though.
