My 98 Expedition XLT 4WD w/ 115K is making a single clunking sound when I first start the vehicle rolling from a stop, not always, but very frequently. It sound like it may be coming from the driver's side front. This occurs when running in 2HI. I think it may be the CV Joint on the front driver's side tire. Does anyone have any suggestions how to diagnose the sound, or test out the CV Joint. If it is the CV Joint, any suggestions for repairing or replacing. Thanks in advance, Josh
i ahd the same probel and what i ended up doing is changing the transfer case fluid. In your case i am not sure since it is in 2wd, mine is a 99 expo and its in AWD all the time. However, if you do change the ransfer case fluid make sure they put the right fluid in there hint hint...don't go to Jiffy Lube
The sway bar link bolts on our Expy's are very bad for corroding and breaking, mine was even missing, so check that out. Also, take a look at your torsion bars since they have a habit of breaking for our '98's. If your torsion bar breaks completely, your suspension will lean real bad to one side (most of the time it is the drivers' side bar that breaks). All of these things are from personal experience.
I have that same clunk going on in my 98 Exp. It doesnt happen all the time and it is usually more noticable in the winter/colder months. I havent wanted to get under there yet until in warms up a bit but my money is also on the sway bar connection area. I just replaced one of those connectors in my 1998 Jeep so I guess its about time.
Also FWIW, we had our Torsion bar completely break on the drivers side of our Exp within the first year that we owned the car (1999). It is a very noticable lean and doesnt drive worth a ***** in that condition. So that problem would be very obvious. Looking at it under the car where it cracked in half, it looked like many jagged sharp ends. The part was made in Mexico and I bet the heat treating/tempering process was the problem.
Now today I got the "CHECK SUSP" light on. Exp seems to be level, riding correctly and the air pump is cycling correctly. So here we go again!
Well I got under the Exp today and the front left sway bar link rod was snapped in half with half of it missing. I went to Ford and picked up the 3 pieces to make it right again. $35 and were back in business.
