I hadn't seen this post yet
For 71 the heads were D0VE, there was never a D1VE head (they did use D1VE for blocks though) And like I told you earlier they are REVISION numbers and since ford revised the heads in 72, they revised the casting number and it was D2VE. This is considered the worst of the 429/460 heads due to being open chamber and very prone to detonation. Due to that problem they revised the heads again in 73 and made the revision D3VE which was used up until the 80s.
.
Thanks much, my search is armed with knowledge now
the numbers after are just a slight revision number kind of like the updates on your browser like firefox version 3.8.2 and v3.8.3 I am not honestly sure what the revision actually was although I have heard that the -C had induction hardened exhaust seats and the -A didn't but I don't know if that is even true.
As to the closed chamber question all 429/460 heads EXCEPT D2VE heads where closed chamber. An open chamber looks like a round bowl, where as a closed chamber has a section that is closed off.
