I need some help with my distributor. It is from a 96 f150 w/ 302 auto. I have it out and managed to pull the gear from the shaft. I am now having trouble with the piece above the gear on the shaft. I have both pins removed but there is no room to get a puller underneath. the only thing i can think of is to put it in a press and push on the end of the shaft... any thoughts?
probably but the problem is getting the leverage. what i think i am going to do is get some flat end pullers and grind down the ends thin enough to fit under it, but thick enough that it wont break..... hopefully. i just dont see how you would do this normally.
I used a small bearing splitter and my hydraulic press to get mine off of the dis on my 95. Don't pound; it will mushroom the shaft: did it on my 79 and had to buy another distributor. There are also pulling accessories for the bearing splitters that can be used for a farther reach. Check with your local auto parts dealer if they have a rental tool kit to work as needed.
As I remember on my '89 302:
1) removed the tension pins
2) pulled the gear
3) checked for burs and varnish on the shaft
4) cleaned the varnish
5) put dizzy body in vise and gently tapped the shaft from the bottom with my rubber mallet.
My memory storage and retrieval system is over a half century old. That is the best I can remember.
ok guys. using a little bit of everyones suggestions i got it off, disassembled, cleaned and pending the purchase of a new oring and seal it will all be done then comes the fun part of installing it and putting in the MSD 6AL box, MSD coil and harness

thanks guys
An MSD 6A box is $30 cheaper than an MSD 6AL. The "L" (rev limiter) part already exists in your truck's PCM.
Yeah if you want to use the rev limiter on the 6al , you probabley need to get into the computer with a tuner & eliminate the factory rev limiter...Lew
I know that the rev limiter may not be compatible now, and that the MSD 6a is cheaper, but i was thinking that if i ever do anything major to the engine i already have what i need. thanks for lookin out though
ok so just to let everyone know that after i took the time and care to rebuild my distributor it was all for nothing
turns out that the orange seal with spring at the base of the dizzy to seal the stator is not considered a serviceable part and ford and aftermarket folk have discontinued making and selling them. kind of dumb that they still sell the pickup coil. dumb because to take the pickup coil out, you have to take the whole stator out, possibly damaging the seal (mine was dry rotted ans crumbling).
with that said i had to but the reman unit from advance auto. i put it in the truck but now have to set the timing. I also installed the MSD ignition and the truck started right up for about 20 secs and then died. i had to stop (wifes orders) so never had a chance to play with it much. thanks again for all the help.
