there were no 351m in 1974, if its the original engine and hasnt been rebuilt it could either be a 400 or a 351c, anywas they all can be woke up with little cash effort with great results,,,
sticker on the motor says 351m/400 and in the displacement section its labeled as a 5.8 which would make it a 351m.
when i pulled my 400 out of a '73 galaxie the label on the valve cover read 351M/400. Dont know if they were the original valve covers but im pretty sure they were.
so you guys are saying this thing could have a 400 in it? only reason im doubting is because when i wiki'd the car the 351m was one of the base motors. infact there were only 4 options for motor 351w 351m 400 and 460. its definatly either a 351m or a 400
351m were NOT introduced until 75, 400 were introduced starting 71 so, go_racing84 yeah 400s were out there 351ms not.... it couldve been modified or maybe not the original engine...
just got the car home so i could actually look at it and mess around with it. Its definatly a 400! Now i dont know if i wanna do an engine swap or just build the 400, as i have no knowledge or experiance with the 400 small block.
Its an awsome engine, check your casting foundry as michigan blocks were defective on that year, call this fella he has everything you need for that engine, he is the only supplier for good parts:
