He's already got $1200 into it. Titanfan11, what kind of warranty would you have on a new engine from that dealer?
Sir, I realize that. I would still price the Jasper and I'll bet it comes out cheaper than than the Ford engine even with the $1200 investment.
Why in the hell would he give his money to Ford and a Ford dealer that refuse to assist him with a major issue?
Based on how this rig has apparently been treated, I'd even consider a reman transmission at the same time. Hell, what's another $3000? Sign the marriage license and plan on keeping her for the long haul.
I appreciate that. It happens to all makes, and models. My co-worker was on rebuild #3 on his 2007 chevy because they couldn't get it to quit knocking. He just bought a new F-150 Platinum, very nice. I spent my whole truck buying life avoiding first year runs of motors, and body style changes, until now. Should have stuck it out. But live, and learn. Like I said before, I love this truck, I looked at others, but I don't see anything that I would pay 40k for on the market, except the F-250, but thats over kill for my life style.
I went with the Ford reman, at the same dealer. I considered the Jasper, but the nearest one is 30 miles, and I like the fact of making this dealer fix every little thing that comes up, and they are 3 miles away.
Well wanted to know the same thing! have a 07 5.4 with 109000 miles on it. never been of the interstate, moter went at that miles.Ford dealer wants 8 grand 2 replace. Why would you spend that kind of money and put the same peice of crap moter back in there to do the dsame thing again!
Because the reality is in today's evironment with EPA regs and all, it's very expensive to adapt a 460 to these trucks. The mechanicals are pretty straight forward, but the electronics look to be a challenge. On the 07, maybe you could find a low mileage used 5.4 much cheaper. They are out there. People wreck these trucks all the time. When my B-I-L blew the 4.6 on his 02, he found a much lower mileage 4.6 for 1/2 the cost of reman out the door.
Sorry about your bum luck on this one. It sounds like the previous owner abused that engine for 60,000 miles. Probably never changed the oil and kept the go pedel to the floor all the time. I would definently get the transmission serviced at the same time. Like someone else on here has said in the past, we only hear about the engines that fail on this forum, but there are thousands out there that run and run without any trouble.
I'll chime in though this doesn't help Titan's cause, I have an '05 5.4 with 202,154 miles on it and still running strong (it does have the cam phaser tick though) so mine is one of the thousands out there that proves these motors will last for quite some time. I'm fortunate to be the one time owner of this and have always taken great care of it as well as kept good maintenance of it and I by no means baby this thing
I agree with you Oldguy on the trans, though not with others talking about getting a re-manufactured one. The average cost of a rebuild kit, for mine anyway, is about $650 and then figure in the labor which depends on the shop doing it, prices will vary, but all of that will still be less than the cost of a reman and labor to install it. Thousands less than a dealership for sure. When my trans went, I got a quote (from the best transmission shop in my area) of $1850 for a complete rebuild, which I didn't think was too bad. Fortunately I have a friend who is ASE certified and owed me one so I supplied the kit and that was all it cost me.
I certainly feel your pain on this Titan, it sucks to have this happen on something your still paying for and I hope it all works out for you now that you've decided to go with the dealership, though I think they're soaking you, that's what they are best at doing to us all. But when it comes to the trans, I would seriously consider going some where else and save yourself a couple grand if that ever becomes an issue. Good luck and keep us updated
Edit: I forgot to mention that my trans gave out on me at around 195,000 miles if anyone cares. I didn't think that was to bad, I was actually happy it lasted that long
Have you considered the possibility that the dealership may have screwed up?
You left the dealership being told that your oil pressure sending unit had failed; with your engine admittedly running poorly. You return the truck only to be told that you have metal fragments in your oil. And you're on the hook for the whole bill.
The tech may be #11 in the country but he's still human and we all make mistakes.
OK! New Jasper in truck,7 grand later,,,OUCH! anyway truck is paid for and 7 grand is beter that 40! Went to shop to look at old moter, looks like it dropped a valve, also have been running Amsoil front to back and inside of moter was a mess!! Sludge,Varnish ware on all the cam lobe's,could not get into the bottom end to see that part.Question is, with all the problems the 5.4 has are there oiling problems also, could have the cam phaser's have caused that also?Don't know what oil im useing in the future, any thoughts from the Expert's?
