Programming a new PATS key

I found instructions for programming additional PATS keys for my '99 Expy. It says it requires two keys, and I only have one. But the instructions call for one key to be inserted, then the "other".

My question is -- does the computer know that I'm inserting two different keys? Has anyone tried programming a new key with just ONE original key?

Thanks!

Yes each key has it's own "ID" Number, so it would only see one key. You are going to need to go to either to a locksmith with a NGS machine or the Dealer . I am a locksmith and we charge 38.00 for the key and 35.00 to put it on the computer. Sorry for the BAD news If you are in the RI area I will for go the computer fee for all FTE users

Programming a new PATS key

Yep, you need 2 keys to program a third for the '99 and above models. A key here in Denver at the Ford dealer is $25, and programming is $45.

Programming a new PATS key

Thanks everyone! Sure wish I was in Denver -- here in Nowheresville, the dealer wants $35 for the key, then $60 to program. I bought some blanks on eBay, so maybe that will reduce my cost a bit (how much ya wanna bet that the dealer says I have to buy THEIR keys, or they won't touch it!)

Well, luckily there are other dealers all within an hour's drive.....

For my oo I had a remote started installed in 01 and it needed a key hidden under the dash in a small wired box so the ignition was fooled into thinking there was a key inserted so it would remote start.
All I did was insert each key [had 4 of them, bought 2 on ebay] turn to the acc. possition and remove. repeat with no more than 5 sec. in between each key insertion. When I was finished I tried each one to see if it would start. It will crank but not start if not programed ,one did not take and I repeated the proccess. they all would start the car after the second reprograming.
I am only going by my own experience. Hope this helps

98 Expy pats key swap thingy.

You need one working key. I bought blanks on ebay for around 20 bucks and had the key cut at a local key shop for about 2 bucks
I then did the key swap thing with the original key in the on position. then with a few seconds replace the old key with the new key and turn to on. Wait until the THEFT light goes out and I should be done. I think this is correct, its been 6 months ago that i did this on my 98.
I got intructions on a google search.

97's and earlier 98's only require one key to program another - later 98's and up require 2 working keys to program another. I too was able to add a new key to my 98 with only one working key (must be an early build).

**** EDIT****
Upon further review, I don't think 97 Expys have PATS keys (other Ford models do starting in 96).
