Whats shakin guys?..
I need some input here... ive found me a nice rustless '79 bronco ( after searchin for a few forevers ) But during this time ive collected a few un-ressurectable ones. So heeres my game plan: '79 with stock everything, 351m, 3.5 gears, C-6 with fulltime or is it parttime 4 wheel drive.. i dunno, BUT ive got a bagged out 400, and a nicely rebuilt 302. The 351m in it is in ok condition, low on oil pressure, but still smooth, peppy runner. 2bbl stock exhaust manifolds, no emissions crap either. drop in 400, 302, or keep 351. I have a 4bbl edel, and a holly 650(new), with a new set of 2 1/4 " headers, and a 3/4 ton rear end from 1980 f250.. What would be a good combo for a daily driver and gentle mudder/trail truck?? Not lookin to hotrod the beast, just have a ...nice bronco.
1979 Bronco XLT 35/12.5/15
3" lift
2 1/2" exhaust straight out'da'back
more to come....
Personally, I'd steer clear of the 302 in the heaviest Bronco ever made (78-79's). As for the other two, folks will tell you neither is all that efficient for a daily driver but I'm partial to the 351 myself.
MOVE the exhaust... out the back will kill you. Exhaust fumes will get pulled into the cabin through the open back window or the drain holes in the tailgate! The dead-air vortex behind the vehicle acts like a vacuum and holds the fumes against the back of the truck. No Bronco ever had the exhaust exit out the rear for this reason.
a gear swap should be first priority since your running 35's. figure 4.10's or 4.56 gears. a 460 would make a great transplant and can bolt to your current tranny.
Greystreak92 is right. The 302 wont be quite stout enuff for a truck that heavy. i had a 78' and dropped in a 460 and it rode like a dream and as far as your exhaust goes you can run duals but what ever you do DO NOT put a h-pipe in the system or you will have a constant buzz in the cab
I had a feelin the gears would be a factor with the tires, A decent set of 4.10's would be a good drop in eh?, Gunna stick with the 351m as per yer mention Greystreak. Ordered up a set of cam and crank bearings this mornin, i hate that low oil pressure idea ...Ya guys know what makes the 4.10 runnin gears typically came in? or is a after market dealio....
no an H pipe is a must and has no relation to the Buzz your getting in the cab. an H or x pipe works to help scavenge the exhaust, improving performance and helps improve the sound also.
Idk man i had a h-pipe and swaped it for a x and it went away although i did go from 2 1/2 to 3 inch pipe and with the h-pipe the buzz was bad enuff to make you ears ring
Whether and H or an X the idea of balancing the exhaust from both banks of cylinders with the harmonics created by each bank is a proven improvement in exhaust flow technology.
The difference with the X is the reduced amount of turning the exhaust has to make going through it. Call it turbulence for lack of a better term. By design, and "X" shaped piece of tubing is going to flow more freely than one that is "H" shaped. When was the last time you heard the wind make a 90 degree turn and not make noise about it? Its just physics.
I will reiterate... DO NOT exit Bronco exhaust out the rear of the truck... unless you are leaving it to me in your will.
Odd you guys should say that about the exhaust. if you plan on runnin round with the back window open...side output or rear output will have just the same gassing effect. Fortunatly the tops come off for complete and tottal enjoyment, And fresh air....
not odd, have it exit out behind the rear tires period. if you have it run strait it will cause this issue. i do not get exhaust coming in with the window down with my exhaust routed properly.
Got a spare set of front and rear diffs, that im gunna weld the shyte out of....any body ever run with a welded front? ( purely just for mud occasions)

Something that came with a 300ci 6. Typically came with 4:10 gears.
