A month or two ago i replaced the needle bearing on the front driver side of my '01 f250 4x4. Stupidly, I did not replace the seals for the hub. Now, it is allowing water to get in the hub. If I had thought about it I would have realized that water getting in is probably what rusted and ruined the stock locking hub. Anyway, hindsight it 20/20. But, here is my question...I bought the knuckle seal and the dust seal recommended in guzzle's needle bearing replacement article but I don't know exactly how to install them. Will it be self explanatory once I get the hub off or is there a method? Thanks in advance for any advice.
There is a seal where the bearing meets the spindle and another where the locking hub meets the bearing. I wouldn't expect the little o-rings to let in much water, I'd look at the seal where the axle runs through the spindle too.
Water getting in a hub, passing the seal????? Now I am concerned.(2001 7.3L 4X4 with leaking 4X4 hub seals)
what are you saying?
Also, would these seals going bad be the most likely reason for water getting in or could it just be that i might not have seated the knuckle properly when re-installing it from the needle bearing installation?
P.S. i installed the warn locking hubs when my stock one quit working and when i pulled one side off water just started running out of it. (not like gushing, just kind of running down the wheel.) Sorry, I forgot to say in the op I that I dont have stock locking hubs.
I was just saying that this is the first I have heard of water getting into a hub via failing seal and that since I just found out that my hub seals are leaking, I am concerned about mine also. That's all. Sorry for the lack of clarity, wrdabney.
I didn't think you were being rude or anything I just wasn't clear about your concern. Anyway, I pulled mine apart today and the knuckle seal was in pretty bad shape. I'm pretty sure that the water getting in is what ruined my stock hub because the othe side didn't have water in it and the hub was fine. You may want to check yours out before somehing gets ruined.

I am going to have my hubs checked out soon, yeah I hope they are not too bad and I can just replace the seals. Good luck with your hubs, wrdabney.
