So I have been fixing and cleaning the 70 F250 360 v8 4 speed I got. The deeper I get under the body the more rust I am finding. The truck is 39 years old and some rust is expected I guess. This seems excessive and "cancerous" and I am not really familiar with combating it.
Should I cut my losses now and try to find a better rig to work on? Not really sure how bad the front end is but I know it is gonna need new leaf springs at least and the frame for the front bumpers.
This kind of question comes up on a regular basis. I checked you profile to see you are from Wa. I believe there are areas in your state that old trucks are rust buckets and areas that they are not.
From experience, you can beat your bleeding head against a wall, or you can learn from your mistakes, sell or save good parts and be more diligent looking for a project truck. Most guys don't have a clue what a real task fixing up an old truck is.
This I do know, most projects are never completed. My understanding Cal. Az, NM have some pristeen trucks available.
I recommend taking the easier route and find a solid truck to start with, you will be light years ahead in the end.
X2 on everything said. I hate body work and rust is a dealbreaker for me.
You can get a rustfree truck and pay the shipping cheaper than you can do a decent job restoring a rusty one. I have seen lots of nice rigs in washington though.
