Engine Rotation Direction

Did a leak down compression test tonight. After doing so my engine has a valve or lifter tapping. I rotated the crank by hand counter-clockwise to get to TDC with a compression whistle on each cylinder. When I fired it I had a tapping that was not there before. Is there harm in rotating the engine (by hand) the opposite direction from that intended? I have never really worried about hand turning an engine in the correct direction only. But, I can't come up with any other explanation.\

Any thoughts?

Tom

On marine engines with their raw water pumps (rubber vaned impellers) turning them backwards is a no-no. But for land motors backwards is not a problem, at least in my experience (25 years as a professional mechanic).

Appreciate the comment and your expertise. I didn't think backwards rotation should hurt anything. It's not like the cam lobes are differently shaped on the valve closing side or anything else I can think of.
