im now living in a place with a paved driveway for the first time and i've notices a bunch of dark spots on the pavement under where i park my truck. all my fluid levels seemed to be checking alright, oil was just a little low but not enough to worry about i wouldn't think. i was wondering if there is anything prone to leaking on these trucks? any help would be appreciated, i dont want to be worrying if its not a big deal. its a 01 f350 6speed 7.3 with 119k miles, straight pipe, ITP OBA, ts 6 pos with swamps tunes.
I would recommend that you carefully look at the oil pan. The 7.3 PSD was notorious for having an oil pan that rusts out. You can wipe the oil pan clean and then check it the next day. If it is rusting through, the oil just seeps through thin spots in the metal. There are many threads on here about PSD oil pan replacement that you can search for more information.
Yes there is 3 oil rings on the high pressure oil pump. On my 02 7.3 one goes on the plug on the back of the hpop. One goes on the icp located on the right side of the hpop not sure where the other one is yet. I have replaced 2 of them, look down in the cavity of the engine behind the hpop if you see oil in there it might be a oil ring leaking. I had the one on the plug let go and lost 4 gal of oil in 20 minutes.
and i was wondering how much did it cost you to replace the o rings in the hpop. and is the stock hpop really as bad as everyone says it is. i don't think i've ever heard anything good about it
O-rings are the most common source of leaks on the 7.3. It's not just the size of the o-ring, but getting the correct material too. The first step is to find your leak. Next, determine if it's oil or diesel. (Diesel can mix with engine sludge and look like an oil leak). As mentioned, look up top in the valley for any signs of leaks. Then clean things up using some degreaser and low pressure water to see where the leak is coming from. In addition to the HPOP, leaks can come from the HPO lines, turbo pedestal, EBPV actuator rod, or even a loose clamp on the intercooler plumbing if you haven't done the CCV mod.
The O-rings for the hpop come in a set of 3 they cost about $30.00 at the ford dealer. They are all the same size, I changed mine out myself there not that bad to get to if you have the tools.
alright thanks for the info. tomorrow is my only day off what is gonna be the easiest way for me to check to see what the problem is. do i need to wipe around the fittings for the hpop with a clean rag? as for the oil pan i went out and wiped it down earlier so hopefully i will be able to tell if that is the problem. thanks again for all the help
