Did ford use the same temperature gauge in the 7.3L as they did the 5.0L, 5.8L and 7.5L??? Just curious because my temperature gauge will barely move when i first start it up in the morning and let it warm up for a while, but there is heat coming out of the cabin heater after about ten minutes. Then when i start driving it starts to move toward the normal range. I do know that diesels run a lot cooler then gasoline engines when driving and run very cold when just idling. I figures the gauge was to blame because ford uses the same temp gauge in the 5.0, 5.8, and 7.5, as they do the 7.3 causing it to be less accurate with the diesel engine and not compensating for the temp difference of the diesel and gas engines. Just a thought that crossed my mined.
Pretty much. That's what mine do and all the ones I ever worked on. You wouldn't believe how common this complaint was at teh first Ford dealer I worked at when these were new. We told them to go cover the radiators in the winter. It helped a little.
The 94's and some 95's are even worse. They have a lot bigger, and better radiator left over from the IDI engines. I had to cover the radiator and take the fan off on mine. It's got a new thermostat and radiator cap too.
It should be running the same temp almost as a gas engine. The factory thermostat I think on yours was 195 degrees. Or close to it. Cars are usually about the same.

Do diesels take longer to warm up than a gas engine? Kinda new to having a diesel truck, this is my first.
Yes they do take longer to warm up. Also, the cooling system on our pickups are really good so that also doesn't help for quicker warm ups. The 203* thermosate helps.
