I am having a fit with my f150 5.0. It will start fine run fine if I shut it off it will not start again unless I hold the accelerator to the floor and then run it at 2000 plus rpms until I can finally get it to idle again.
I have done the following:
replaced the idle air control valve
replace fuel filter
replaced fuel pump relay
replaced the fuel pressure regulator
None of the above helps. The codes I get are 538 and 412.
If I let the truck sit overnight it starts right up again until I turn it off again then I have to go through the process again.
DTC 412 indicates that during Engine Running Self-Test, engine rpm could not be controlled within the Self-Test upper limit band.
Possible causes:
Open or shorted circuit
Throttle linkage binding
Improper idle airflow set
IAC solenoid contamination
Items external to Idle Air Control system that could affect engine rpm
Damaged IAC solenoid
Damaged Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
I am beginning to lean toward the stuck injector. I read a thread that indicated that this can flood the engine. That is the way it restarts as though it is flooded. I have to hold the accelerator to the floor and crank and crank. As far as the testing I have done it over and over and get the 538 code every time and yes I erased the codes before I retested. If not I am leaning toward the ECM.
It sounds like its injector related to me as well.
If you decide to replace them, I would recommend replacing all 8. You can get Ford Racing 19 lb ones for a 5.0 Mustang or Ebay has some injector sets that are refurbished.
I have read that the temp sensor can cause starting problems, but I have never seen it actually be the problem. Its good to hear that your truck is running good.
