I just had a episode with the truck yesterday. I thought it was frozen fuel/water or gelling because it just died. It restarted after i changed the fuel water seperator but then died again. So anyway it was towed to a friends shop to sit inside overnight thinking it was frozen. When it did the same thing today in the shop i then thought it was the CPS. I had a black one in there since about 98k miles. I now have 161 k. I had 2 spare CPS to pick from, One new Black one that I had and I also have the new grey one that ford gave me as the recall. I installed the black one. The truck runs like new. I also added 911 to the tank and some DK. SO my question is... how long do these last? Is there a noticeable difference from the black one to the new grey one?. The old one in the truck was pretty much just shot. The truck would idle for like 4 mins the just shut off. I didnt want to install the grey one because i have read here that some guys are getting false codes etc after the recall one is installed. This is whay I put in the black one rather than the grey one. any ideas ? Jeff
I could not locate any black style CPS from any INT dealers. I was told they are all gone by now. So what do you guys do now.. I have the grey one as a spare thay was given to me for the ford recall by the dealer. Is there a difference from the ford one compared to the international one? INT told me they get 24 bucks for them also. Will my truck still run like it does now with the grey one installed etc? I also have a DP_tuner if that makes any difference.. thanks jeff

That seems to be the general opinion. I went in the local NAPA yesterday and bought a spare CPS. It's black, and the box says "Made in USA" as opposed to 99.99% of the other stuff they stock which is made in China. I was surprised.
The common issue with the grey recall CPS is an increase in the change in rotational velocity on cylinders 3 and 8. On some trucks, the increase is not enough to make any difference, on others, the change can trigger cylinder contribution failures, a noticeably rougher idle, loss of fuel mileage, etc.
Ford has a TSB out for phantom codes after installing a grey recall CPS. There's nothing wrong with the engines, the changes are sourced directly at the CPS.
If you have a black one, use it. Keep the grey as a spare. If you can't find a black one, the grey will work for many people. If you get contribution failures by using the new CPS, look long and hard for a different one.
