I have a 1979 F150 that originally had a 351M. Recently I replaced it with a 460 from a 1977 F250 (I think). To pass PA emissions, I have to have all original emission equipment that came with the 351M. Can anyone tell me what it was originally equipped with? EGR, PCV, Smag pump... Any info will be greatly appreciated.
If your state is like North Carolina, your truck would not have to have everything from the M but every thing required for that year model. Every thing on the 460 for 79 would have to be on the engine. It would be the same for a 302 or 351 or 300-6. Here they are not as concerned visually, but use the tailpipe sniffer for emissions content, and the levels required for that year must be met.
When I bought my 76' Bronco, it had just about all the emission control stuff pulled off it. When the time came to get it tested in Seattle, it failed the test poorly. So I went to the local parts store and purchased the cheapest catalytic converter I could find with 2 1/4 ends. I plumbed the left and right exhaust into it which made it a single exhaust; and it passed with flying colors. They never looked under the hood, but I believe I am supposed to also have a smog pump with some sort of air injection system into the cylinder heads.
I moved out of the city now where they don't test, so luckily I don't have to worry about that anymore; at least for now.
In VA. all you need is what was on that year truck. I know it had a smog pump, pvc valve, and
the calt. converters. But also in VA.on a 250 you could get truck tags for it and not need the emissions test.
You should do like I did and move to Nebraska. We enjoy NO emission testing on ANY vehicles. Being an X-Pennsylvanian I appreciate what 'yall go through. Also, we enjoy rust-free vehicles due to the limited use of salt in the winters. Sorry I have no advice on solving your problem, just wanted to say hello.
