I have a '79 F150 with a 351 Motor. The emission system is shot and some is disconnected. I want to remove it. If I remove it there will be areas that are exposed to the elements. Is there a kit that I can purchas to bypass the emission system or doesn't it matter if they are exposed.
Tim, You may first want to check with your state about removing the items. In North Carolina, there are fines up to $50,000.00 and jail time for removing the emissions from a vehicle. In metro areas like Durham-Raleigh they test emissions with yearly inspections. I had a truck that had them removed years ago and was faced with reinstalling them or selling the truck.
You did not say exactly what will be exposed. A little more info would be helpful.
I bought a 77 ford with a 400m that shounds like it was in the same condition as yours. Dont have any smog laws here. I removed the smog(air) pump and all of the lines that connected to the carb. and termostat housing. I went to the local harware store and found brass fittings that screwed into the existing holes. As for the carb. & egr valve the parts store will have some small rubber caps that are used to plug the outlets. Hopes this helps, it worked for me. Just make sure and have the engine re-timed and the carb. tuned up after all this is done, I also had to replace the thermostat.
