Does it matter what year 6.0 intercooler to replace the 7.3 one? And what extra parts do I need? Changing out one for a friend not sure the year of his 7.3 also.
They year doesn't really matter, some say the later 6.0 IC has a 3.5 inch inlet on one side. This is significant because you need new intercooler boots because the 6.0 inlets are a little shorter and most have a 3.25 inch inlet on one side, the 7.3 are 3 inch (again there is rumor that later 7.3 are 3.25 but you still need new boots because of the length). So you have to measure the new intercooler to know for sure what to order. It's really impossible to preorder the right stuff.
On some 2002 and 03 trucks you may have issues with the trans cooler lines getting in the way, which is why it's a good time to upgrade to a 6.0 or other cooler!
I swapped my stock '01 IC (aluminum tanks) with an '04 6.0 IC. The 6.0 had a 3'' inlet and 3.25" outlet. 6.0's flow air the opposite direction thru the core, but mount the same way. The stock IC hose necks are 3.25", so you need a 3" to 3" (about 6-7" long) hose for the driver's side connection. I rerouted my trans lines while the IC was out. so that there are none running under the 6.0 IC (deeper core), but most find that with a little bending and removing of the lines from the plastic bracket, you can gain enough clearance under it. I chose to get mine completely out of the way. Overkill! I did this in case I go to a larger aftermarket IC someday.
I have to switch to the 6.0 trans cooler when I switch to the intercooler.. The 6.0 intercooler won't fit in there with the stock trans cooler. The lines are mounted solid and they are in the way of the intercooler !
The boots are the same on my 03... so thats not a problem 3"-3" on the one side and 3"-31/4 on the other boot !

OP has the same year model as me, 2001, so he should be able to make the trans cooler likes work. 6.0 trans cooler would be a good upgrade to do while he's in there though.

I agree Roland ! I'm waiting for a chance to do both at the same time ! I just don't know what kind of stuff I need to convert the lines from the stk trans cooler to the 6.0L I hear John wood makes a kit to do the swap ! Might be BTS can't remember ! I should be able to make something I would think !

There is a thread where Joe (Izzy351) has the parts list and pics of the fittings needed to adapt the 6.0 trans cooler. Simple hardware store items; and get the cooler hose from an auto parts store. Here ya' go. Read this. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...ns-cooler.html
The stock hard lines on the '02 tranny cooler can certainly be modified to fit up with a 6.0L IC... I did it last spring as well... just cut the right angled nippled off the hard machined block fitting, plug it with a bolt and sealant, drill & tap the top of the block, and thread in and seal a new fitting with a hose nipple. I had my sone blowing into the other line with compressed air while I was drilling, and also slathered the drill bit with a little grease to keep filings from getting into the cooler and return to the tranny... neary 20K miles since then and not a single problem or leak.
Funny, even with this post it's not real clear what size the intercooler inlets are. I was under the impression you needed longer boots too. Sounds like this isn't true?
I tried measuring my IC with it in the truck, but wasn't able to get really good measurements. They seemed the same side to side.

They probably are both 3" then. As long as you measure them the same way you should be able to tell if they are different ! Can you use calipers in there ??? Just an idea !
Russ, I wasn't able to get a caliper down in there and holding a tape measure I couldn't tell exactly where it fell, I think I came up with 3 1/8 inch.
Whitesdford, the answer is yes. The 6.0 flows better and the result is lower egt's some have noted 200, typical 100 deg drop.
