I was kicking the the FE stuff today and noticed I had these heads that I had forgotten about and just wandered if any one knows what they are they aren't in my book. Just wish they were C4AE-G, thinking those are the good ones not the C3AE-G, right?
-Johnboy
C3's are a very good head as there part of the Tall ports heads like the C4's a very good ported casr iron head... They would just need to be updated on the exhaust side with hardened seats for todays unleaded fuel.. If there ran on the street for any length of time..
They were just the run of the mill early heads for the FE's of that time period.. there was a mid year change in 65 I believe. where they changed the port size to a shorter port in the C6AE heads....
Still not a bad deal I think I have $50 in them. I jumped on them because I knew the C4AE-G was a big deal its a medium riser head isn't it? I just couldn't remember at that moment if it was C3 or C4 that was good so I threw the dice on them a few years back, I mean heck even the standard C8 passenger heads go for more than $50 bucks now. You wouldn't happen to know the chamber and valve sizes would you?
-Johnboy
Aww the chambers I believe are stock to be 71cc to 74cc's... Its been awhile with me dealing in the stock parts..But as I recall I think the stock valves were 2.020 for intake and 1.550" for the exhaust..One of the Number guys my chime in and correct me tho... I dont go by books..Just by what I remember and have worked on...and the Ol brain isnt by far what it use to be..LOL..$50 Real good score if there not cracked and pass mag...
I had them magged they are good but I just braved the snow to bring them in and they are C4AE 6090G. I bought them almost 10 years ago and I only remember I have them when I have to move them and sometimes the numbers get mixed up in my head, funny thing is they still have the original valves with the ford logo in the middle just like my quench C heads, I haven't seen that too much. I can take pics if that would help. I have a 428 1UB$ crank and a block with screw in freeze plugs I plan on using in my comet but I want to use the best of every thing I have but the heads off that motor are some D2 something or other with tiney sodium filled valves. Just trying to figure out if these are the best the third option is I have two sets of C8AE-H just plain jain 390 heads.

Sorry I misremembered the number is was C4AE-6090G and it appears to be the standard head. But thanks for the help. Interesting set though, I think one must be a service replacement as it has the FoMoCo instead of the ford oval and also lacks a date code and they both have ford valves the whole way (all the ones in the dateless head match) round but three different styles.

It sounds like you have the makings of a really strong engine there. It's my favorite combination and I believe Ford really missed the boat by not producing it as an option in the Fairlanes and Comets. Would have really dominated the streets.
The best thing you can do with those sodium filled exhaust valves is put them on a shelf and remember them as one of Ford's worst ideas. It was great in theory but failed in functionality. They will break during high rpm usage. I could go into a long explaination as to how I know but you've probably heard the horror stories already and you can believe them. Often when they go they take the block and head with them. Use 1 piece valves from Manley or Donovan (if he still makes them), or Titaniums.
The 5 best cylinder heads Ford created for the FE are;
1. SOHC
2. Tunnel Port
3. High Riser
4. Medium Riser
5. Cobra Jet/427 Low Riser
The sodium valves are already trashed and the heads will probably too just haven't gotten around, the 428 came as a pump motor not really a performance engine in any way, bottom end turned out great to the top end is lame.

That 428 pump moror probably came with valve rotators on the exhaust, at least. The heads are probably equal to a low performance 352/390. The ones I've seen were usually TE heads. Good luck with your build.
They are D2TE, it just the valves looked smaller than any FE head I have ever seen. What do you mean by valve rotators? They were multi groove valves.

Valve rotators are a replacement for the standard type exhaust valve spring retainer and are more than double the weight They have something like a combination sprag/torrington bearing that forces the valve to turn very slightly each time it cycles. Ford used them on most if not all Industrial, HD truck and marine engines, 427 cid 300 hp, for example. I don't know if they are even used anymore. We always threw them away because they were so heavy they caused the springs to lose tension, Thereby causing valve float. I know they were in use through out the '60s and at least part of the '70s. Those 1972 D2TE heads mayhave flame hardened combustion chambers and seats, another of Fords Better Ideas of the era.
