Installing running boards

Working on 2004 f350 ext. cab.
I just bought, what I think, are factory running boards to install on my truck. Each mount has 4 bolt holes on the truck side. The top 2 need some kind of nut clip or u-nut to be able to bolt into. There are holes there, just no nuts to screw into. I can't find any hardware packs for these. Can I get something like this at my local Napa (auto parts store) and if so what is the real term for these nuts? Here is a link to what I'm talking about:

http://www.ironcrossautomotive.com/i...10,412,414.pdf

It's called a 5/16" nut clip there, which seems on the small side. Anybody that has experience in this, please chime in. This should be an easy deal, so long as I can locate the parts.

For the heck of it, the mounts are Ford part#4C34-16470 AB

Anybody?

They're called speed nuts ...

The bolt P/N is N806738-S301

The Speed Nut P/N is N800538-S2

For Ford boards/tubes on a Crew Cab, there are 3 brackets per side. The middle & rear brackets will mount with four bolts 'n speed nuts each. The front brackets will only mount with three bolts 'n speed nuts each. For a total of 22 bolts 'n nuts. When you get 'um positioned, it will be evident which one is left out on the front brackets.

The Ext. Cab "I think" only has two brackets per side, but maybe the above description for a crew cab will help you get an idea nontheless.

I have the extended cab, but still comes with 3 mounts and is exactly how you described. Looking at it I noticed the 3 bolts needed for the front mount. Thank you for the quick response and insight.

Any clue what size bolts for P/N N806738-S301?

Speed nuts P/N N800538-S2, I will only need 10 right?

The technical description for the bolts is "SCR&WASH M8X1.25X33" ... It's a metric bolt with a pressed-on washer.

And for the nut ... "NUT-M8 X 1.25 ULOCK"

Not exactly sure how many speed nuts the Ext Cab will take .. the crew cabs take 22 (11 per side).

Thanks again, for the exact info I was looking for. I was able to get the speed nuts the following day from a NAPA auto parts, and get the new boards installed. Lickety split.

I tried looking up those part numbers under Ford, and NAPA. I couldn't find it under either. Where did you end up buying them, and what did they call them, or their part number would be extremely helpful. Thank you. I have an 01 XL, and bought factory running boards on CL, however they came with only half of the bolts, and none of the clips.

FYI for anyone looking, Fastenall has these clips in stock. They sell for $11 a box, 25 to a box. I don't have a part number, just go in and ask them. The box says Ford, GM, speed clips. And they sell bolts that are the same size but don't have pressed on washers.

Sorry I didn't respond earlier. I didn't realize the thread had continued, and of course I can't find the receipt any longer. They were basically 5/16 bolts and washers and I brought in a pic of the speed nut to NAPA. They look exactly like this:
Amazon.com: Help 45414 Speed Nut 5/16-18: Automotive
They knew exactly what I was after and had various sizes of these 'speed nuts' all nice and organized in a metal box.

Worked great.

They are also called J-nuts, if the guy behind the counter has not heard of a speed nut.

The NAPA parts had me wondering too. It's clear now, thanks. I'm glad it's doing great for you.

sorry to bring this thread back from the grave, but the nuts are called CAGE NUTS, not Speed Clips or J Clips, those are different and are not for running boards, those are light-duty. The cage nut is an actual nut welded or crimped to a Speed or J clip. THAT is the difference.

how do I know this incredible revelation? I found a 1997 Aerostar Sport at a salvage yard with factory running boards, so there I go to take them off, took me forever. $16.95 each. Once I got the boards down complete with brackets and including the FLANGED BOLTS, (no washers, the flange is the washer if you will). I took a look at the fasteners for the bolts, some kind of "attached nut to a clip" I concluded.

so I went home happy assuming the nuts would be "standard fitment" in my van. When I got under my van to install the running boards, it did not have the nuts. (it does have all the holes for the nuts).

but it took me a week to get back to the salvage yard and by then the van had been crushed. Lost opportunity. I started looking for the nuts online, at least I remembered how they looked. Here's how they look:

3/8"-16 J Type Phosphate Cage Nut | Fastenal

I did remove all the 16 bolts and they are all 10mm (3/8").

I have recently purchased OEM 6" running boards for my 2017 f-150 but they didn't come with hardware.
Does anyone know where I can purchase just the hardware or know what size the nuts and bolts are so I can go to my local hardware store?

if you look under the truck, at the vertical beams of the chassis, behind the rocker panels, there should be 2 square holes on each side of each beam. In those holes you push a clip that should have a hole for a 10mm or 11mm hex screw.

if you got the brackets with the boards, the brackets will tell you if you need 8 or 16 clips and screws per side. ACE Hardware usually have the clips and hex screws.

but if you have the chromed tube boards, those require a "L" bracket bolted to the horizontal beam of the chassis, and the beam should already have the nuts welded in place.
