My bro-in-law & I are working on a 74 F100 for an older family friend.
The ribbon wire on the back of the current cluster is SHOT. I found one with the configuration in FL & had it shipped here to SC.
But the dash is still not working. We've checked all the fuses. But are starting to chase the wiring. What kind of a nightmare are we into?
Im not sure exactly, but I am having the same issue with my 78. I replaced the ribbon plate on the back of the cluster as well to no eval. I am chasing the wires tomorrow and will let you know what I come up against.
We've checked & tested every wire in the cluster harness. We traced them w/ the help of the schematic in a Haynes Manual (not the most helpful book for this truck, BTW). Tested all resistance ranges, ground points, and sending units. The individual gauges test fine, but the D@MNED ribbon on the back seems to be the problem. I have ordered 3 different clusters from 3 different salvage yards & they have all been worn out. I understand that this is a 36 year old part, but does SOMEONE make a replacement ribbon for this application??
If it were up to us, we'd bypass the factory gauges, as others have done here, and replace them w/ more reliable up-to-date equipment. but the truck owner wants it looking as original as possible.
Another option we are considering is bypassing the harness & cluster (except for the lighting) and straight wiring each gauge. Has anyone else on here done that?? They appear to just be simple 2 contact gauges w/ a common ground resistance wire.
Ohh man. I'm sorry dude! I thought all 73 to 79 were wired the same way.
Ain't no big thing. I appreciate the help...

I can confirm. The pin configuration for the harness is different on the 74's. they have a 13 pin configuration; 8 on the top, 5 on the bottom. I called Bronco Graveyard to see if they had anything not listed on the site that would be compatible, and they just don't carry it. Said these are actually printed overseas & they'd been waiting years for them to come out...
OK, I found this one on Blue Oval Truck Parts. It's 114.95. The ones on Bronco Boneyard are around 60-70. Anyone know of any other options? I'm desperate, but I don't know if I'm $115 desperate yet...
