I have 65f100
I have round cluster not custom cab sweep
I opened y
up and there is a strap attached to dash but is not attachedvto anything else
I assume this is the cluster grounding strap
where does it attach to on the cluster
this is the strap. If it is to hold harness wires. What do I look for to ensure it is grounded properly. Dash lights flicker. Other post say to check grounding
The sweep speedo has a plastic bezel so screwing it to the dash does not produce a ground - thus the need for a separate ground wire and clip from the Instrument Cluster Back Plate to the dash support bracket is required.
The round speedo uses a metal bezel so screwing that to the dash would normally complete the ground path.
Here's the entry in the MPC. The 81B indicates Custom Cab or sweep speedo in this case. Should also apply to 1966 F100 4x4 Custom Cab, but they seem to have missed it from the applications.
Look at the constant voltage regulator. The center terminal is the ground and it just goes to the support bracket behind the cluster. The picture is a sweep speedo, but it should be the same on yours. That red wire is a lot longer than the original which makes it easier to pull the panel out. But flickering lights might indicate a problem in the headlight switch rheostat. Just looked at your pic again. Those two empty holes in that support bracket, that's where the ground goes.

thanks i will look for this wire, but I don' believe it is there. I am getting the sense this truck was a farm truck for a while. I am finding fixes that are not fixes, just bandaids. I just started this a few weeks ago and everyone here has been helpful with my questions.
Crop Duster - Look at my post #7 just above yours. The round speedo cluster uses a metal bezel which provides the ground path and so no separate grounding wire was used. It could be added without any harm, but the wire and the clip on the ICVR were only used on Custom Cab trucks with the sweep speedo and plastic bezel, which cannot ground the assembly through the bezel, so they added a wire. I gave the part catalog reference that confirms what I am saying, too.

I believe you. But 50 years of rust an dust can do away with good connections. Actually just removing and reinstalling the thing might cure the problem. If it is a ground problem.
