Hey whats up everyone? I have a 1985 F350 dually mason dump. And I am planning on doing some stuff to it its already in nice shape but I was wondering if I can put the newer 6 speed manual transmission in the truck. Right now its got the original manual in it 2wd with a 351. I dont know much about the newer style transmissions I would like to do something about the fuel consumption issue. I wont be using the truck for work much anymore so the 4:10s are coming out and most likely 3:73 or possibly 3:55s if i can find a set will be going in. And I will be putting a set of nice super singles on the rear. So the next step was to do something with the transmission change to either the 90s model tranny or the even newer 2000 model tranny. Any tips/suggestions?
The 80s/90s ZF 5spd can be found with the correct bellhousing for your 351, but the 6spd out of the newer trucks can't. What transmission do you have now?

Just go ahead and put a zf 5 speed in it. This tranny has a overdrive 5th ratio of .76. If you leave your 4.10's in place, this will give you a effective ratio in 5th of 3.1 to 1.
Couple ways to do the super singles. Either I could leave the dualy rear in the truck and get the 8 lug to 10 lug conversion piece and go with a 22.5 big rig rim on there, which I do not plan on doing. OR I could find a rearend out of a single rear wheel f350 throw that under there and get a wider 8 lug rim and put a wide tire on there. Some of my friends have done it both ways and I think the 2nd way looks better...
If I do go witht he ZF5 speed, will i need a different bell housing? or can i just find the tranny box and it will work with my bellhousing from the 4 speed? And I am assuming I will have to do something with the driveshafts get a new one made or something?
The zf has the bell made into it, so you have to get the correct zf that came behind a 300 six or a 351w(I think they came behind the sixes, not sure about that).
