My girl friend for my birthday is paying for a custom built rack for my truck. It's totally going to be custom made so I'm looking for ideas or pictures to help me out. The guy has a welding and truck shop so the skys the limit for design ideas. I was thinking of a back rack safety rack for a general starting point. I was going to have mounts made on the inside upper corners for those oval led lights most commonly seen on Ryder rental trucks ( box trucks) they are about 1 x 4 inches and put two in each corner hooked into my brake lights. Possibly I was going to put marker lights on the outside?
Do you have a canopy on the Truck now? If you do I like those fully caged canopy type of racks. Allows a dry storage area (in the canopy) and lots of rack storage on the outside. Not to mention if you get it built very sturdy it can double as a decent roll cage for roll over protection.

Reason: took out OPs quote
Maybe I got carried away there a bit in my previous post. I just re-read your post and it sounds like you're just looking for a headache rack.
Reguardless,,, put some thought into it and I'm sure you'll come with something slick!
If the guy that's doing the job is running a business that does that kinda stuff regularly maybe you could have a chat with him to get some more ideas. Between FTE memebers input and his you should be all set for coming up with a nice rack design.
Camo has the right idea. I was going to puts lights like that on in the same spot but picture those on a safety rack and two reds instead of the red and white in all LEds
How many marker lights do you think I could do before I go from cool to overdone?
My headache rack has two red led ovals on ea. side with a white led oval in between the reds for backup. they run sligtly at an angle upwards from being horizontal. With 2 square bars set on diamond across the window between the lights.. the rack curves over the 3 rd brake light and under it.( 2 bars) It is built out of 1x2 rectangular tubing. With flat plate for the lights on ea side framed in with tubing..The framing follows the curve of the cab and on the outside frame I mounted three 4 bulb amber leds with chrome trim.
On ea. side of the 3rd brake light I mounted rectangular led. orange strobe lights made by Echo that are controlled by a switch in the cab for emergencys.
I have an aluminum diamond plate cross tool box. and behind the box I ran a stick of the 1x2 tubing across the bed that I mounted my hi-lft jack on.
Going down the sides of the beds from the headache rack I used 2x3" angle iron for a bed cap and supports the headache rack. From the crossbox to the tailgate I used boat anchor chain for a railing to tie stuff down too .i got photos on my laptop but I havn't figured out how to post them yet.

In my opinion, you can't have too many lights, but your local law enforcement agencies may have a different opinion, especially if they start getting UFO reports when you drive at night.
