Over the past couple of days when I crank my 01 F 150 4x4 w/ 5.4 my oil pressure gauge will go up to normal and after 15 or 20 seconds it will drop to nothing at all. It will do this till I hit approx 45 and above and then it will return to normal and stay there. The oil level is full, the temp outside was 38 degrees, and my truck has 114,000 miles on it. Please Help!!
You might want to check the pressure with a real gauge first. The factory pressure gauge is nothing more than a mechanical idiot light. Above 7psi reads "normal", below 7psi reads zero.
Thanks so much guys. You probably just saved my engine. I just bought this truck and just my luck... I only have 114.000 on it and already having problems.
good point before you replace any part you should test it, and I have seen that cause the idiot light with a needle to drop, I guess the big thing would be wether or not it makes any noise when there isn't any oil pressure
My 97 F150 had the same problem. I replace the sender, and nothing....but it was an easy fix after all. All I had to do was Flush that oil out and change the oil filter each time, about 5 flushes and that's it , problem fixed ! At first the oil was dirty and when I did it the fifth time it was only clean oil coming out. After that I recommend pouring synthetic oil in.
I think its got the cheapest filter that you can buy on it. I just bought the truck and will change the oil tomorrow. I have always used Motorcraft filters which is what I will replace it with. What weight synthetic should I run. I live in Georgia and other than this winter it rarely gets down past 20 degrees down here.
Another question is do I flush the oil with new oil and filter 4 or 5 times or what. Man that sounds expensive!!! Thats probably a stupid question but I just dont understand
Thanks

You have to add motor flush and run the engine for 5 minutes or so, after that drain the oil and refill with new oil and replace filter. Repeat same steps if necessary.
