300 or 302

I'm looking to buy an older pickup to pull my 19 foot boat and do odd jobs around the farm. I talked to a guy who has a pretty nice 1991 f150 with a 300 straight 6 in automatice in nice shape. My concern is that he said it gets "horrible" gas mileage. I also have found a couple 1994 f150's with a 302 auto in them. I know what the mileage is with them from previous experience and I thought the 6 cylinder would get better mileage than the 302. Any thoughts or comments? Also, would the 300 pull the boat which would be around 2500 lbs loaded?
Thanks,

Hey man, I have a 95 F150 4X4 with a 6 inline IT ROCKS, its attached to a 5 speed, With mine It get 17mpgs, and thats with my Punk kid driving habits. . . Its runs strong, hauls great up steep grades in all. Personaly the 300 with a automatic sucks, I think. with any inline, I also have my Grandpas 1970 Chevy pick up 1/2 ton with a 292 six 3speed automatic, Crappy performance and fuel milage,,,, its MPGS are the same as my 88 Ford with 460 if not worse and thats at 12mpg. My advice would be get a 300 with a 5speed or 302/351 if you want an Automatic. Inline sixes work twice as hard when coupled to a automatic given that fact all that noise about fluid coupling. I think anyways, im not a EXPERT by any means, just what I know. HOpe it helps out bro.

If the 91 has the E4OD(4spd OD) tranny, and it's in good shape, it will do fine for what your pulling. I much like to get a 300 I6 in my truck as the 302 in it doesnot pull a load good. Then again this is the 1st 302 engine I had and I am used to the big six/manual setup!

Find a good F-250 of the same vintage or a little newer with a 351 or 460 and NEVER worry about having enough power to do the job. If you do not use the truck as a DD, the mpgs are not a problem.

The 300 is easily the better work motor and it typically gets the best milage of all the smaller engines so this truck has somethoing wrong with it.
