Actually, the use of radar detectors is only prohibited in VA and DC.. There are a lot of places(UT) where you'll get hassled if they see one, but you're not committing a crime..
In VA for instance, if you are caught with a RD, they will take the serial number from the RD during the stop, and return it to the owner.. The SN is sufficient evidence for the courts.. It's a $50 fine and no points..

State code in VA allows us to seize them as evidence and ship them to the owner at their expense when they've served their evidentiary purpose in court. But they are not forfeited to the state. The fine is $40 pre-payable plus court costs. If you paid $50, you got overcharged.
If you are registered commercial, you may be surprised to find out they are illegal in your state. Particularly for the F350 crowd with GVWR over 10,000#.
