Hey guys. On oil changes I have always just done the normal oil change you know, drain, new filter, refill, done. Is there a good way to flush out the system to do a very thorough oil change?
and I've also heard of people adding tranny fluid for 1k miles or so. But I've never done either. If you have a high mileage engine and have never done this before, it seems like if you cleaned up enough gunk, it may break loos in chunks and clog the filter, pickup tube, or damage something else.
if you change your oil regularly I wouldn't worry to much about flushing it,most of us only do that on engines that have sat for awhile,or are sludgy and you don't know the history on them.
I have used karosine to flush them, and diesel works too.but really uneeded if you look after your engine, almost every new oil has some sort of detergent in them to clean the crud out of the engine anyhow.

just some additional input .. I did an 'oil flush' to a high mileage chevy once (it wasn't seafoam though) .. and shortly after that it started leaking from the rear seal .. guess that gunk was actually doing something beneficial ..
.. and I was told once by a mech engineer that if you have to shake it (any kind of 'treatment') before you put it in, you don't want it in your engine ..
Im not going to tell you not to do it but be carefull , if theres alot of sludge in there it will losen it up and slowly start drain to the pan , could clog up the oil pump tube & screen , i have seen the oil drain ports in the heads clog up to , i don't know on your truck if theres a way to look inside the valve cover with a flash light with out removing it or not , they may all have bafflels?? ...Lew
Leave it alone, change the oil regularly.............Any flush will wind up sending crap into the pan resulting in a clogged oil pump screen..............not fun.
DO NOT use any of the engine flushes! If you want to do something good for it, just change the oil and filter, then drive it for a week or two and change it all again.
