6.4 commuter ?

My wife is due a new Ford, she has been looking at the Edge, which may be alright. But the mileage I've seen is not much better than ,say , a 6.4, supercab, shortbed, XL, with a 6spd manual trans and 3.55's ? When you look at the rebate the dealer talked about they are in the same price range. What say yall ?

Well in order for the 6.4 not to give you any troubles her commute should be hwy and at least say 20 miles each way.

Stop and go traffic, city driving is not going to be the best choice for it.

This motor will do best on long trips/towing those sorts of things.

MPG's are hard to pin down but I would expect around 12 city 15/16 hwy if you can keep the speed to around 60-65 mph.

So the Edge maybe better.

I agree with Senix - I use mine as a commuter. I live about 12 miles from my office. I'm on the highway about 7 of those miles (not stop-n-go). I drive a lot on the weekends for fun and head to relative's houses (about 100 miles away) at least once a month. I've never seen the "DRIVE TO CLEAN EXHAUST" message. I don't think you'll have any problems with the regen issue as long as the truck is driven a decent distance every now and then. My truck regens about every 210-250 miles. When the "CLEANING EXHAUST" message comes on, I try to let it finish (cruise above 30mph), but there have been plenty of times I just turn it off if I'm at my destination - it will restart again once the filter fills back up. No big deal (unless you do this many times in a row and it never gets to finish).

As for the Super Duty vs the Edge. The SD will have higher maintenance costs, but I feel the SD will be worth A LOT more than the Edge in resale value down the road. SDs have great resale value.

She drives 90 miles round trip daily. We live in the country, gravel roads, lots of sand on the floormats, cattle feed. Just seems a waste for a crossover type car.

having said that, get the SD and don't look back! You will use the truck more than you think.

with that many miles, the SD is the only choice. I have the Lariat trim - not sure I could do with less than that now!

No doubt, Super Duty. With a 90 mile drive, you have justified it, but you had better get Ms. Wife a step up from the XL unless she's got a little tom boy in her.

XL or XLT , My wife grew up in Washington state, her father drills water wells. They always had diesels of every type. She's the one who got me in diesels! She prefers a manual transmission. Kinda cool for a young pretty woman to love work trucks!
