Turbo Help

I have an 2005 F350 6.0 diesel with 116,000mi. I took it to the delarship they replaced the ficm and now they say the turbo is bad and needs to be replaced at a cost of $2800.00 parts and labor. Please give me some other options. the best after market or best used replacment parts. Also I have only Added K&N air filter system. are there any other easy or very inexpensive things I can do to increase preformance, and anything to help preserve the turbo, injectors and any other parts that might go bad in the near future. Please help. My warrenty has ended.

If you want to preserve your turbo and engine put the stock air filter system back in...

Maybe your turbo just needs to be cleaned. My local shop cleaned mine for $75 and they found out my veins were froze up and rusted, so they cleaned it up and runs great now

What did they say was actually wrong with the turbo? Sounds like a rebuild kit and cleaning. 116,000 miles isn't much, but if that K&N let something too large thru or allowed dust, dirt to cake up the impeller or damage it...that is a significantly more expensive repair. I'd go with what ehgeeray said...put the oem filter back on. Ask them to tell just exactly why the turbo failed.

you can get the chra center housing and a new unison ring from ford and rebuild it. take it apart and it may only need to be cleaned up. but worst case the chra and unison ring need to be replaced.

First, I want to thank all of yall who took the time to give me this quality information. I have used this Ford dealer repair shop for all of my warrenty work. I have known the service manager for awhile. He told me that the turbo was frozen solid when it was taken apart. (The truck sat for 3 months.) They bead blasted it again (third time since new) cleaned it up and got it working to sum degree. The loss in power is noticeable. I asked them about rebuilding their answer was that it woulden't be 100% when they were done so they suggested a new one. Also what can I do to help prevent this from happening again. Is the answer a better quality Turbo? The intake system is stock except for the K&N filter. I use the truck to travel, sometimes pulling my 33' fifth wheel. thanks for the help.

Welcome to FTE biggsarge420

In 05 Garrett closed the tolerance on the unison ring causing problems, then later revised with a relief cut. If you have the resources you can change out the turbo to save yourself some money. A few aftermarket turbo's are out now, here is one thread.

it wouldent be the same as replacing the chra?
sorry but unless the case is damaged or the vains are wasted it would be. the chra is basicly the turbo minus the front and back case.
