watch early 289s as they are five bolt bells. 65 up are six bolt. There is no way to tell looking at an windsor small block if it is a 302 or a 289. 351 windsors have a taller deck and are readily identified.

The only way to tell is the stroke. of which i don't have handy.

289's use the same spark plugs as 221/260's and 302's: Auto-Lite/Motorcraft BF-42 or BRF-42 or BTF-42.

These same spark plugs were also used in 351C/351W/352/360/390/400/410/428/429/460.

289: 1963/68 Fairlane & 1968 Torino / 1963/68 Galaxie/LTD / 1963 Meteor / 1965/68 Mustang & 1967/68 Cougar / 1965/68 Falcon / 1964/68 Comet / 1968 Montego / 1966/68 Bronco.

No 289's in F Series Trucks!

The 289 was available in every 1965 Mustang, as was the 289 HiPo.

The 260 was also available in 1965 Mustang's, but not available after 8/22/1964.

5 bellhousing mounting holes: 1962/63 221 // 1962/64 260 & 1965 Mustang before 8/23/1964 // 289: 1963/64 & 1965 Mustang before 8/23/1964.

C5AZ8501K .. ALUMINUM Waterpump was used on 221/260/289's with 5 bellhousing mounting holes. The timing cover is also different on these early engines.

The 6 bellhousing mounting hole 289's use a cast iron waterpump.

289's from 8/23/1964 have 6 bellhousing mounting holes.
.
No 302's (in F100's) until 1969.

Stroke: 221/260/289 = 2.87" / 302 = 3.00" / 351W = 3.50"

The 351W was introduced in 1969, but was not installed in F150/350's and Bronco's until 1981. Econoline's got it in 1975. No F100 ever came with a 351W.
