I have a 1979 F250 that I'm trying to get back on the road. Before I got it, it had been sitting for around 10yrs. I now have it going down the road pretty good, but the other night on my way home I needed the wipers. I realized that they didn't work real well. The work when they feel like it. They actually worked fine for the first 15mins or so, then they started acting up.
It has intermintent wipers. I had a spare (used) switch, relay box, and motor. I have put all of those in (one at a time, tested between each replacement), and I still have the same problem.
I installed a bulb holder and grounded it to the same place the relay grounds, put the positive side on the power feed to the the relay box. Then I went for a drive. The relay box constantly has power, even when the wipers act up. Any ideas as to where my problem is? Or more tests to run? I'm out of ideas........
The motor is of a brush and winding design. Heat makes parts expand, the parts loose connection, or connects intermittantly. The motor cools off, parts contract, works normal until it heats up again.
I have a indoor cooling fan doing that same thing. Works fine for 10 minutes shuts off or acts irraticly, motor cools, starts back up again, heats up, shuts off and acts up again.
If that sounds like what is happening to you above, the motor is most likely shot.
