I recently bought a 2004 F250 FX4 with a 6.0 and its seems to get about 11 to 12 mpg in town and 13 to 14 hwy. Is this right or is something I can do to increase this mileage? My Dad has a 03 f350 dulley with a 6.0 and gets 16 city and 19 hwy with 4.10 gear and mine has 3.73s. I really expected at least the same.. Any suggestions?
Gangrats on your new to you truck . About your fuel milage , my truck is a 04 6.0 6ps srw with 3.73 is closer to what your Dad is getting (16 town 23 hiway). While each driver is unique to there own driving style your milage could be differant . You might ( if you have'nt already ) do a oil change , check your air filter and check tire air pressure . Also is the truck stock , or is it lifted , larger wheel and tires ( both have efect on wind resetance ) will eat some fuel . Even check (if your truck has one) your cat, if it becomes clogged it will cause back pressure . My Dad also has a 04 6.0 w/auto srw 3.73 and gets 16 in town 22 hiwy his is all stock . I have added 4'' magna flow (cat delete) with B-D brake , and a Edge A-2 tuner . While it gives me better power when towing , I leave it in the drive mode when empty and it adds 1mile better in town and 2+ on hiway. Enjoy your new ride !!!! ollllo
I have the older 7.3 diesel(2001) and my winter fuel mileage is closer to the 13/16 average in the winter with winter blend diesel. In the summer it is closer to Roadfind's.
I can get 20 on long drives if I hold the rpm's to 2000 or less with summer blend fuel.

Thanks Roadfind. Here is a bit more information that may help. Mine is all stock with the exception of the old efj1000 edge programmer which I have tried all 3 settings and there is no difference in the mileage. There are no exhaust modifications, the tires are stock size with 70 psi. There is no lift kit, or even a leveling kit, The oil is almost crystal clear or oil..LOL It was changed when I bought the truck. I have puled the air filter out and checked it, and it seems recently changed, nice and clean. As far as my driving style, I have been babying the truck to see if I can make it get better fuel mileage. I am not one to drive my vehicles hard. I take really good care of them.
The one thing I have done is check the for recalls and she did have some. I took it to the dealer and had them fox them all, and they flashed the computer with the new codes( I assume ) thats what the service manager said anyway. I know the truck will idle higher after it runs for 2 to 3 minutes in the morning until I touch the gas pedal and then idles down to normal. Other than that, the truck runs flawless, with the exception of it walks the road a bit, going in for a front end alignment. Tires are wearing nice though.
Just one more thing, the trucks exhaust smells fine, like no excess fuel or running rich. No smoke at all of any kind. Not even when I mash the gas. Thanks again for your thoughts.
The truck has 145000 miles. And starts perfect in the cold.
Maybe a vacuum leak?
Turbo Boot?
The Reflash?
Any thoughts or suggestion will be appreciated..
Stumped ???? , I really think you should be able to get at least 1-2 miles better in town and 3-4 better on hiway . Short of going to a locale compatend truck shop or dealer you just to run a cylinder balance test on the truck . They can plug in to trucks computer and run a test to see if injecters are all operating at peak performance, turbo is giving correct boost. Even the EGR valve can cause bad fuel milage. Sounds like you've done the basics , a trip to a tuner may be your next stop . Someone else here on the blog might crime in to give you a shout out for a shop near you .
Are you getting your mileage by the overhead computer (a.k.a. lie-o-meter) or by hand calculations?
twags I am going off the lie o meter right now, untill i have burned off the tank of fuel. I am only at 170 and half a tank. Not looking good. I should be around 230 to 240 by now
I have a 05 f-350 drw that is stock except magnaflow turbo back and it gets 14mpg in town and 16 on the road by hand calculation. I have babied on trips and it and got 520 miles from full til the low fuel light.
