Brakes dragging

My left rear brake is constantly squeaking sometimes increased or stops after quick application of brakes. On short trips the wheel is much hotter then the other wheels(which are usually cold).

What's the proper way to troubleshoot a dragging brake? Is there anything it can be besides calipers? how do I determine?

Truck : E99 7.3 no brake mods.

How many miles are on you brakes? I have had worn brakes before that did this. A metal to metal contact will make that wheel extra hot compared to the others. Check your pads to see what is left.

I'm going to check them out tomorrow.

Ok I'm going to check them out tomorrow I hope that's it.

I've put about 3000 miles on it and it was a Repo so I don't know how many before that.

Being an early 99 and a repo, I don't know how many miles, it could have high miles and just need new brakes. Let us know what you find.

If the rotors are worn down too far, the calipers will not be able to retract due to a square cut o ring that makes the piston release the brakes has been over extended. If that is the case, it is better to replace the calipers than to press the piston back and install new pads. The o ring on the piston could be damaged and not function properly.

If you need brakes call Clay at RiffRaff, he is up your way. Don't skimp on cheap brakes. I personally went with Powerslot rotors and Hawk pads. Don't know if Clay can get these for you but they are great. I have had them for about three years and had no problems after many problems with oem. They are spendy though.

What I would do is pull the calipers and check your slip pins, one or both could have siezed up. Something as easy as pulling those pins out and cleaning them up and regreasing them and putting them back in, alot cheaper than a caliper, check those first..

I was watching this vid from powerstrokehelp
YouTube - powerstrokehelp's Channel

I don't have the springs that pulls the pads out do I need to get these? maybe because it's an E99 I don't have them?

The brake pad springs arn't a problem at all, getting your pads out are a breeze, no special tools needed..

Yeah I already cleaned them up one was a little crusty.

Also one of my calipers pistons is alot harder to compress then the other.

Is that normal?

Depends how harder, but it should just squeeze in like the rest, is it the one, the side giving you problems?? If it is you might have found your problem. I'm just throwing out other less expensive fixes to check before you get to the more expensive things..like calipers..

Yeah it was on the problem side. It wont compress flat like the pass side.

I don't know if it's because they were different calipers (caliper pins had different size bolts.)

I didn't read all the replies, but I had the same thing happen on my truck. Mine ended up being a bad caliper. If you do a search you will see countless threads about this problem. It is generally the rears.
Replacement calipers are super cheap compared to the problems they can cause. Mine were about $70 from NAPA. They were rebuilt Ford calipers. I will be putting them on everyother brake job after tearing up a set of PowerSlots with Hawk pads.

BTW, I did not notice a difference between the Hawk pads vs NAPA Ceramics vs OEM. Truthfully, the OEM setup lasted longer than any other setup. My gooseneck ATE UP the Hawk pads. These "superior" pads were coming off the backing plate and chunking apart before they were 2/3 worn down. Don't believe it, the box is in the back of my truck and I can post a pic.
