My shift module failed the self test. Absolutely nothing. I have found this module for $580 (thru a dealer). Has anyone had any luck finding them cheaper? How about pulling one from another ford model? The salvage yards around here seem to Bronco empty. I guess I'm not sure what the purpose of the module is other than to activate the transfer motor. Is it possible to bypass this module? As you can read, I'm pretty shift module stupid. Any info would be appreciated.
The shift module should be the same for any fullsize (1/2 ton) truck with an electronically shifted Borg-Warner 1356 transfer case. This would include the entire F-series half-ton line and the Bronco. The electronic 1356 came into use sometime in the mid eighties and remained as the primary t-case through the end of production in 1996.
No, the shift module cannot be bypassed. The shift motor requires the interaction of the module to keep from engaging at the wrong time and damaging the case.
I found a module at the salvage yard. It wasn't exactly the same part number. The old part number started with E8 while this one started with F1 rest of the number is identical. Either way, it worked. I push the button and hear a clicking sound and then the 4x4 light comes on. I took it around the yard in two wheel drive and as I started to slip I pushed the button. Clicking sound followed by a "clunk", 4x4 engaged and the hubs locked.
I can't seem to get the low range button to work, nor does the light for low range light up. Am I missing something? Is there a chance the Transfer case motor is starting to go? Is the "clunk" sound normal in Broncos? Is the clicking sound normal coming from the module?
How did you try to engage the Low Range? you have to be at a full stop and in Neutral before you engage, it's kind of dumb, but if you're new to the truck you might ignore that.
Thanks Encho! I tried it that way, but will certainly try it again, there is always the possibility of overlooking something. I'm definitely not used to this push button stuff. That's why my daily driver is a 73 Ford Pick up, nothing electrical.
