I have a 79 F100 ranger with a 302 and a manual 4speed trans,a 377A rear end with 140k miles everything is stock from the factory.I'm having trouble with the U-joints in the back drive shaft. I keep going thru them.
I don't feel a vibration and I don't drive it hard but a u-joint will only last about 5000 miles before I have to replace it. can anybody tell me why the u-joints keep going to crap? I would appreciate any info that anyone has to offer.
Of coarse the first thing I'll doubt is the quality of the branf u-joint you are using. You should be paying at least $12 to $15 per joint for decent quality. Besides that, check the rear pinion yoke to verify it is tight on the pinion shaft.Next, check to see if the slip yoke is bottoming out on the front shaft, especially if you carry loads regularly or go off road. Finally, make sure all of the u-joint caps are in the same plane with the shafts mounted, not a sline or two off.

A few other things to consider. Are you installing them or has it been the same shop over and over, they could be getting put on too tight or even damagedin assembly. And be sure that you keep them greased good, that makes a big difference.
New joints are coated with a protective film inside and out. They need to be greased after installation. I don't mean to sound rude, but you are greasing them, aren't you?
sometimes drive shafts are removed and the spline is seperated. when this happens the two ends have to be timed. sometimes there is an actual timing mark before the splines on both ends but most often you just line the yoke on one end with the yoke on the other. if not, the shaft will be out of balance, causing excessive vibration and premature u-joint failure.
didja do that?
Just one thing to check on-when I replaced mine on a 79, the parts house told me all were the same in the drive line. This is not true, all except the one at the rear are the same(4X4 with double cardigans front and rear) at the pinion yoke(with the straps)the caps should be just slightly larger by about 1/16". The ones sold to me(that I kept eating)had the same diameter caps, when I got the correct ones in the problem was no more. The "wrong" size does fit, just not correctly and made it's self evident with same problems you have(I do grease them often with synth grease) now that the correct one is in there I only go thru them about every other year.
Hope this helps! Chuck P.
