power window motor making noise

Just today my passenger side power window motor started making a loud noise going up and down. It still works fine and its not slow but it is a loud squelling noise. Haveny pulled it apart yet. Any advice?

Most likely the gears that attach to the motor are going bad. They have a tendency to make sort of a grinding sound when they go out.

Sadly, the only way to know is to drill out the rivets and pull the window motor.

Does the track have enough grease on it? If so, you may just need an $8 fix if the gears Hunt4fun mentioned are still good. I replaced the rubber spacers in the window motor in my car. It's not too difficult. Without the spacers, the gear on the motor is not held tightly to the gear on the window track. It can make noise, slip, etc, yet still work for awhile until it gets worse...

Here's a link from another forum (pardon me.) Nice write up.

Hunt4fun- that's a nice line up for Fords you have there.

^ Haha, my fault! Try it again.

That's a quick '96. What have you done to it?

Stock 302/E4OD with 320,000 unrebuilt with a Flowmaster, a drop in K&N and an NOS dry kit 75 shot on et streets. It had 275,000 last time I ran it. It has an E303 cam now but I think it made it slower with stock valve springs, rev limiter and converter. Im doing a roller windsor swap soon with World windsor jrs, long tubes, same cam and a converter. Hoping for 14s on motor and low 13s on spray. Nothing too serious I drive it everyday. I may try to run 13s with the currrent set-up just for fun before I yank it lol.

Ok i pulled it out and the spacers are in good shape. I plugged it back in and it still makes a bunch of noise so im guessing its shot. Im just a little baffled why the passenger window motor would go before the drivers side. Anyhow any preferences on replacements? I have Napa, Autozone, Advance, and Pep Boys.

My driver side window got loud one day too. I put new bushings in it about 2 months ago so I know they are fine. Window works fine like you said but is loud when going up and down.

I figured it might need to be greased or something. My buddies dad gave me a motor he had when he went to crank windows so I guess ill be throwing it in if I cant fix my current motor.

Whenever you complete the repair, pick up some paraffin wax. Cut it into a sharp triangle and use the corners to stick in the weather strip guides for the glass. Run it up and down all surfaces. The new motor will last longer.
