Rear Window Problems
I just bought a '88 Bronco, the rear window needed help going up and down. The tailgate and lifting mechanism are aftermarket. I installed a new USA motor from the parts store, it made no difference. I took everything apart and can not find any problems. Do they make a Heavy Duty motor that should be used in this application? Also did Ford ever make any of these with a manual rear window like on a Blazer? Thanks!!!

OOO! Shades of Hitchcock.OK enough of that. I have found on my Bronco that the window tracks/guides play the largest roll in smooth / fast window operation. After resurecting an 80 that had set for years--- disassembling window mechanism, greasing, repairing wires, grounds, switches, etc it still ran slow. No money for new so had to make do. Window guides in tail gate were about half gone(top half), so I swaped them side for side and turned them up side down (they're curved to fit) made a huge difference. Good luck OBCB

Never a manual gate glass in the Bronco from the factory. You couldn't reach a manual crank anyway. There is no other motor for the rear glass. A properly lubed and adjusted mechanism doesn't need a different motor. The bottom glides and bottom ends of the window track that bolt to the sides of the gate are the key components to get (and keep) aligned if you want trouble-free tailgate window operation. I say this because there is nothing else that adjusts.

Oops! I lied... there IS one other potential concern. Striker bolts for the tailgate. If they have slipped there is the potential that the gate is misaligned just enough to cause excessive drag when the glass gets up into the channel in the top. I would consider this a last resort though simply because a misaligned tailgate typically causes the window to stop all together by virtue of the interlock switches inside the gate. The way to check this is to lower the window. Open the gate. Manually close the driver's side latch fully. (The two cams should form a circular hole when they are fully closed as viewed from the end of the tailgate). Raise the glass with the keyswitch and see if the glass moves any better when its not pushing up into the upper channel in the top. DO NOT run the window all the way up! If it has no support the weight of the glass will snap it with the gate open and the glass all the way out.
