ESOF Question
I am buying new truck, I have narrowed it down to two candidates, one is a 2001 F250 7.3L SC LB 4x4 and the other is a 2003 F250 6.8L(V10) SC LB 4x4. I am going to look at both tonight, they both have the ESOF 4x4 and I have never used it, what is the proper way to test it's operation to make sure it works?

Well the first thing to know is the hubs are actuated by vacuum. The default mode for a vacuum failure is defrost. If you are running the truck with the heater on the floor and it is only coming out of the defrost there is a vacuum issue and that will effect whether or not the 4X4 will engage and disengage. If that checks out, put the ESOF into 4X4 high and the dashlight should come on and if you are on a non-slippery surface you should feel the front end bind a little. If it is slippery it will be obviuos that the 4x4 is engaged. If you have access to a lift or jack stands, you can obviuosly see when the front of the vehicle is off the ground if the front wheel is also turning with the front axel when it is engaged.
