transmission questions

I have an 84 F150 4x4 with the 351W engine and a 3-speed auto transmission (C6?). The transmission slips a lot and pops out of gear frequently even with the fluid full. I'm guessing the bands are shot and it needs an overhaul. However, I think this is beyond my limited abilities as a mechanic, so I'll probably be taking it to a shop.

Can anyone give me a rough idea what it should cost to overhaul a C6? I may consider putting in a rebuilt one if it's not too much, so any ideas what that would cost?

Lastly, is it possible to swap out a C6 to an E40D in this truck? Overdrive would be nice to have, but I doubt it will work in an 84 since the E40D is electronic rather than hydraulic...

C6 rebuilds are pretty cheap compared to E4ODs and other OD transmissions.

Here's a mildly built C6 for $1000. Triple that for an E4OD:

TCI Auto: C6 (289/302/351C/351W) Sizzler® Transmission 66-up

Here's a guy, $660 for 4x2 trans, so add a little:

So figure $500 or under is a bargain.

Do you know a good trans shop? Do you know an automotive shop that you trust that can refer you to a transmission shop?

You can change to an E4OD, but it won't be cheap. You need to add electronics. Baumann Engineering, among others, make a stand alone controller for the E4OD.
